Home Minister Shahara Khatun said on Tuesday the government would take action after an investigation into an allegation that ATN Bangla Chairman Mahfuzur Rahman made 'derogatory comments' about the prime minister.

“If he had said anything against the prime minister, action would be taken,” she said after a discussion on the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking organised by Narcotic Control Department at the capital's Osmani Memorial Auditorium.

Mahfuzur Rahman has called Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ‘talkative’ in a programme during his recent visit to London.

A private television channel broadcast a report on his speech on Monday.

He made this comment while recalling PM’s remark that “It was not possible for the government to guard anyone’s bedroom.”

The ATN chief also talked about various issues during the visit. On May 30, he said journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi was victims of an ‘extramarital affair’.

Shahara said misleading comments of journalists regarding the killing of the couple is hampering the investigation into the case.

“If any misleading comment misleads people, we will take action,” she added.

While talking about attacks on journalists, she said, “If you have any allegation, you can file a case against the accused. We will take action.”

A handful of newsmen of ATN Bangla owned by Mahfuzur Rahman attacked the rest of the protesting journalists in the Jatiya Press Club on June 24.

Sagar and Runi were killed in their West Rajabazar residence in the city on February 11 this year. Law enforcement agencies could not arrest anyone in this connection.

I clearly remember how this fat scum used his media outlet against BNP's in 2008 election. I was hoping BNP take action against this fat scum when they emerge in power but it's seems like Awami will do the job for BNP.

Dhaka, Jun 27 (bdnews24.com )—A Jubo League leader on Wednesday filed a defamation suit against private television ATN Bangla Chairman Mahfuzur Rahman for making 'derogatory remarks' about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Emdadul Haque Emdad, a leader of ruling Awami League front's Dhaka Metropolitan unit, filed the case against Mahfuzur Rahman at Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) Court.

Metropolitan Magistrate Farhana Ferdous set Thursday for passing an order in the case after taking it into cognisance.

The ATN chief had commented on a wide range of issues during his visit to London last month. On May 30, he also said the slain couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi was a victim of 'extramarital affair'.

Rahman drew flaks from journalists and various quarters who demanded his arrest for the offensive remarks.

The social networking websites were flooded with footage of his speech after another private TV channel Ekushey Television ran a report on Monday.

The footage showed Rahman calling the Prime Minister 'talkative' recalling her comment that "it was not possible for the government to guard anyone's bedroom".

Rahman added Hasina's comment was a 'mistake' usually associated with busy people.

"I am a leader of Juba League's metropolitcan unit. Mahfuzur Rahman's remarks have not only offended Awami League President Sheikh Hasina but I have also taken offcence," Emdad told bdnews24.com after filing the case.

When Home Minister Shahara Khatun's attention had been drawn to Rahman's remarks against Hasina, she had said, "Action will be taken against ATN Bangla owner if he is found to have made derogatory remarks against the Prime Minister."

A similar libel suit was filed in Comilla district against the chief of the private TV channel.

Golam Mostafa Sharif, Joint General Secretary of Comilla Victoria College unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, filed the case with the Comilla Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Metropolitan Magistrate Kawsar Ahmed directed the Officer-in-Charge of Comilla Kotwali Model Police Station to submit a report after an investigation into the matter.
