A wave of apparently co-ordinated bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, have killed at least 57 people and injured more than 170, say officials.

The interior ministry said 13 locations had been attacked, including al-Amil in the south of the city and Halawi and Karrada closer to the centre.

The bombings are the worst in months - and follow the withdrawal of US troops.

They come amid fears of rising sectarian tensions as the unity government faces internal divisions.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attacks.

However, analysts say the level of co-ordination suggests a planning capability only available to al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Bombings remain common in Iraq despite an overall fall in violence.

In al-Amil there were two blasts, the second of which appeared to target rescuers who had come to the scene of the first explosion.

Raghad Khalid, a teacher at a kindergarten in Karrada, said all their windows had been blown out.

"The children were scared and crying. Some parts of the car bomb are inside our building."

Smoke was seen rising over Karrada district, with ambulances rushing to the scene.

Another woman said her baby had been covered in glass.

"She is now scared in the next room. All countries are stable. Why don't we have security and stability?" said Um Hanin.

Political turmoil

Iraq's year-old power-sharing government is in turmoil after an arrest warrant was issued for Sunni Vice-President Tariq al-Hashemi on terror charges.

The entire al-Iraqiyya group, the main Sunni bloc in parliament, is boycotting the assembly in protest. It accuses Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki, a Shia, of monopolising power.

Mr Hashemi denies the charges. He is currently in Irbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, under the protection of the regional government, but Mr Maliki has demanded that they give him up.

A BBC correspondent in the region, Jim Muir, says in the current heated political climate many Shias will see the bomb attacks as Sunni acts of revenge for the charges Mr Hashemi faces.

The last American troops departed from Iraq on Sunday, nearly nine years after the war that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

President Barack Obama acknowledged that the situation was not perfect, but said the US forces were leaving behind "a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq, with a representative government elected by its people".

I think the big handover was only 3 days ago - another sign of America resolving the issues of the world. They have left and are leaving Iraq with a great sense of security and of course dont forget democracy. Well done to the USA for helping to solve the problems in Iraq. NOT!!

And well done to the Iraqis for possibly the beginning of a downward slide towards another dictatorship after we got rid of the one you have been crying about.

Hard times ahead for Iraq.

Why they even invade in the first place? Seems it was more based on exaggerated claims, fanboyism, and fragmented feelings with little or no intellect or logic on the US side of the matter in the first place.

Most of the deadly bombings were carried out by Al-Queda. Hell, they even bomb funerals after killing them before! Sheesh! Man that's hardcore.

The moronic moron scum that entered the country under false pretenses have raped and screwed the country promising to eliviate dictatorship. They haven't got on the plane and the sh1t hits the fan. For once in your life have the self respect and decency like 1 or 2 respected ex pilots on here and accept you screwed up in Iraq - and you shouldn't have been their? This is the result of your involvement yet you have the indecency to blame the Iraqis? Thank you Amreeeeeka for... NOTHING

Honestly speaking, the dictatorship was far more stable, secular and peaceful..what we have now is a sectarian Iraq yet you put the blame for destroying a stable iraq on iraqi people..americans dont know jack sh_t about history of iraq, they have no business there! Other than mess it all up and run!

And even a bigger point, the dictator ship was imposed by no other than western powers and Iraqis never came forward asking Americans to remove the dictatorship, they instead wished to save their lives and spare their country..America today is walking in the shoes of Pharaoh thinking it is the god!

AQ and Saddam who were staunch enemies of each other have now found a fertile breeding ground and lasting partnership for the long term..thank you america..for making world more dangerous and creating more terrorist!

^^^^somebozo - lets try to step back and look at the situation. What state Iraq was in before and after the US "helped" them. The death and destruction - was it worth it? Was it worth making up false statements about the WMD? Its been left in a horrible state. Now as soon as they leave their puppet government haven't got the ability to sustain peace for more than a week - yet the likes of Gambit are quick to blame the regime - you put the regime in power you dumbos. Blame yourselves - not others!!!!

people of iraq, should start building their nation with democracy, not start blowing up other citizens as US troops leaves

its like Children starting to fight each other as soon as baby sitter leaves...did the babysitter tell them to fight eachother??

Sign of political unrest brewing inside Iraq . can they recover anytime soon even if the occupation Forces leaves the chaos. I think all the political group needs to come to table for solving any grievances instead of solving in the battle field . and any out side forces whether its Iran or Saudi Arabia or the western powers needs to keep them out of internal matter of Iraq . Good wishes to Iraq
