Dhaka: A series of landslides triggered bytorrential rains have killed at least 53 people, including two army officers, in southeastern Bangladesh, officials said today amid fears that the death toll could rise as many people remain buried under tonnes of rubble.

The highest 36 deaths were reported from Rangamati hill district where at least two army officers were also killed by the landslides. "So far we can confirm to you at least two of our officers were killed and several other personnel injured as they were on duty," an army spokesman in Dhaka told PTI.

He said an army detachment was deployed to clear the road linking the port city with Rangamati as it was blocked by an overnight landslide but while they were working a fresh landslide buried them under tonnes of mud.

"But so far we can confirm only two deaths," he said. Landslides triggered by torrential rains have killed at least 53 people in Rangamati, Bandarban and Chittagong districts, Dhaka Tribune reported.

A least 11 people were killed in Rangunia and Chandanaish upazilas of Chittagong. In Bandarban, six people were killed and five others were injured in landslides, police officer Rafiq Ullah was quoted as saying by the daily.

Officials said army troops were called out to join fire service rescuers to launch a salvage campaign as scores were feared to be trapped under tonnes of mud after incessant rainfall caused by a depression triggered the landslide.

The landslides prompted the authorities to order a massive evacuation campaign as they feared rocks from hills could damage vulnerable structures at the foothills and cause more casualties.

According to local media reports, many of the victims belong to the ethnic minority or tribal groups in Rangamati and Bandarban who live in makeshift structures along the hills. "The rescue campaign is underway. We can get a clearer picture of the casualties later," a spokesman at the Disaster Management Ministry said, adding that the casualty figures could rise as many remain missing.

The officials said many people were asleep when the landslides hit, causing more casualties, especially among children.

According to Rangamati district relief and rehabilitation officer Majumder the death toll could raise as they are yet to gather information from many areas due to communication disruption by heavy rains.

Inter-services public relations director general Lieutenant Colonel Rashidul Hasan said two military officers and two soldiers died while clearing a road near Manikchari in Rangamati.
He said one more military personnel still remain missing and ten more injured members were rescued.

In addition to the figure, two Ansar members were killed, said Rangamati additional superintendent of police.

Major Tanvir Saleh of Rangamati region army headquarters said army personnel were engaged to clear the Rangamati-Chittagong Road beside the Manikchhari checkpoint while another landslide occurred around 10:30am.

The army members — Major Mahfuz, Captain Tanvir, Corporal Aziz, and Sepoy Shahin — died on the spot, he added.

Besides, dozens were injured due to the landslides at places including Police Lines, Juba Unnayan, Bhedbhedi, Manikchhari army camp areas in Rangamati town and Kaptai upazila, our correspondent reports.

Fire service, army, police and locals were conducting rescue operations in the affected areas in the district.

Reaz Ahmed, the director of Disaster Management Department, a total of 21,00 were evacuated in two to 24 shelter centres in Bandarban and Rangamati district.

No people was evacuated in Chittagong but people, living on base of hills, were told to move to the safe place, he said.

The situation worsened as power supply was cut off since early Monday in the district, he added.

According to the met office, 343 mm rainfall was recorded in the district till 6:00am in previous 24 hours. Chittagong experienced a total of 222 millimetre rains.

The districts of southern Bangladesh often suffer the effects of monsoon and tropical cyclones at this time of year, which has often resulted in catastrophes that have claimed a great deal of lives, despite government attempts to regulate the construction and placement of homes.

The capital experienced a spell of downpour on Wednesday evening, which caused water-logging on the roads in many low-lying areas and disrupted vehicular movements.

Many major areas, including Motijheel, Shantinagar, Bijoynagar, Bailey Road, Elephant Road and Khilgaon, went under knee-deep water due to the downpour that continued for hours.

The commuters, especially working people and shoppers, faced immense sufferings to avail transports to return home, as many roads were flooded with water and vehicles were stuck in gridlock.

Home-goers got stranded at their working places and shopping malls. Rickshaw-pullers and auto-rickshaw drivers charged exorbitant fares from the passengers.

The city dwellers feared that if such downpour occurs on a regular basis throughout the rainy season, they will have to face more sufferings, as water-logging has been an acute problem in the capital.

Since many city roads and low-lying areas experienced water-logging on Wednesday, the situation might worsen further if the intensity of rainfall increases during the rainy season, according to them.

Met Office recorded the highest rainfall of 153 mm in Sylhet division, and 34 mm in the capital from 6.00 am to 6:00 pm on the day. It also forecasted that heavy shower is expected in different parts of Chittagong, Sylhet and Barisal divisions on Thursday.
