I agree but add Russia to the top of the list. They have played a duplicitous role in all of this and have their hands red with Muslim blood. What a wholesale fratricide! Ask any non Assad-aligned Syrian (majority) what they think of Russia and you are bound to receive an extremely colorful and expletive filled answer.

Well, Turkey thought they could somehow aligned with Russia as well, but seems they got played pretty well. Putin is a former KGB leader, he's a master in playing such geo strategic games and double crossing you before you even know what hit you. He seems to have played erdogan quite well. Now Turkey seems to be sticker in a quagmire. Turkey did sour her relations with the West in favour of a rapprochement with Russia , now that they have been double crossed by Putin they seem to be sticker in the middle. We don't even know what they are going to do with the S-400 systems they bought from Russia for billions of dollars and which they have already received most of the components. They preferred it over receiving the F-35 which they have been one of the key members in building and which they have now been removed from program.
Will be interesting to see how things play out this coming months,and see how Turkey will realign their foreign policy .

You shouldn't overestimate Putin just because you don't like Erdogan. When it comes to strategic warfare, the Turks are actually quite successful in their operations in Syria. All attempts by the Americans to build a viable Kurdish state have been postponed to the next 100 years. Putin has given Assad a helping hand, but is now realizing that he has made a strategic mistake and is at a loss.

Putin's and Assad's strategy was the scorched-earth tactic to bomb the unwanted opposition to millions out of the country and regain majority violence as a minority government. Erdogan has put a spanner in the works and has currently even started an operation and is willing to send all refugees in Turkey and on their periphery back to Syria to stem the demographics against Assad again.

With the opening of the western border to the refugees, Turkey has even taken a tactical move and brought the western states to their moral limits, because drinking wine and pretending to be water and the literal demonization of Turkey is now being turned on the Europeans. The last word has not yet been spoken in Syria.

I disagree to some extent.i hate to admit it but Putin has played a very good game in Syria. The simple fact that he has been able to shore up the Assad regime who was almost crumbling and breaking apart prior to Russia intervention is quite impressive. Assad's army even with the assistance of Hezbollah, Iran and other Shias proxies were losing the war until Russia's massive intervention. Without Russia's presence in Syria Assad won't be in the situation he is today . Assad now controls over 70% of the country and they have been making gains every month. They will eventually retake the whole country if things continue that way and it's all thanks to Russia . Putin has also managed to put Turkey on the back foot and limited Turkey's presence to idlib and a small part of northern Syria. He has also managed to pull Turkey away from its western partners and cause a major rift between both sides, strengthened Russia's position Vis a vis Turkey and gain some leverage over turkey (military deals, gas deals etc), so Turkey is now stuck in a dilemma, since it's difficult for Turkey alone to help the rebels gain any form of leverage /advanced against Assad army/Russia. The rebels have been on the defensive(forget about offensive) for a long time now and even keeping the little area under their control is difficult for them. So in this regard Putin has achieved almost everything he could have achieved in the conflict and he is now a key player in any deal making in the region, making a good come back for Russia in the middle East an area Russia has been rather absent since the fall of the USSR. So I will say he has played his cards quite well here.
It's difficult to see how the rebels will keep the little territory they still control in the long term. So I think it will be a Putin victory here unfortunately.

Moments later, a Turkish Anka drone was downed, and the baboons (rebels)are cheering over the wreckage thinking they have downed a Syrian drone. What a twist.
