Assam threatened by illegal Muslim immigrants: Sarbananda Sonowal - The Times of India

DIBRUGARH: Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said Assam faces "threat" from illegal Muslim immigrants and not from Hindu or other minorities facing religious persecution in other countries.

"The growth of Muslim population in the state has registered an alarming rate of 197.39 per cent as compared to the growth of Hindu population to 80.9 per cent during the period 1971 to 2011," The Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports said here today.

The BJP has always been vigilant to this development and will always strive to ensure that "political power does not pass into the hands of illegal immigrants," he said.

"After the Supreme Court repealed the Illegal Migrants Determination by Tribunals (IMDT) Act, 14 religious organisations of this community united to form the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) which has been trying to achieve political power in the state," he said.

The influx of Muslim immigrants and the alarming rise of their population has even threatened the existence of the indigenous Muslims in Assam, the minister said.

The protest against the Centre's decision to provide citizen status to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi and Christian minorities who have entered the country before December 31, 2014 was "motivated and fuelled by the Congress and AIUDF," he said.

"Assam alone does not have to bear the burden of all these minorities but all states will share it," he added.

The BJP government at the Centre is committed to protect the rights and interests of all indigenous population of the state, he added.

What is centre doing about this issue

. . . . .
They were de-votered last year. The paper tigers of the Hindu right are nowhere to be seen. To leave they need an incentive. Removal from voter list is one but stronger ones like an environment of fear should have been created. Otherwise leaving is not in their interest. Why will they leave? They get paid more. They get to establish their own villages, take over local villages etc. They rule the roost. Why will they leave? :D

Just because Muslims registered a higher population growth rate than Hindus, you came to a conclusion that they are illegal immigrants?

The Muslims in that area are perhaps one of the most backward communities in entire India hence, they are far behind the Hindus in terms of literacy rate, family planning and other social development indicators, the general prejudice against Muslims in India may also have contributed to their current status. This may explain the high population growth among them.

Solution? Stop perceiving Muslims as a threat and accept them as your own, ensure their basic rights like education, participation in social welfare programs and witness the dramatic change.

BS . A 198 % increment from 71 to 11 is a clear act of olympic level pole vaulting.

There are many Rohingyas who have some 10-15 children each. Reason? They feel threatened because of the ongoing persecution in Burma and think that numerical strength may save them. The Muslims in the North East are in no different situation than the Rohingyas.

Interesting, I've always argued the problem in Assam is an ethnic one, not a religious one! It's just that they are allowed to show their outrage on the Muslims only.
