NEW DELHI: The strategic Dhola-Sadiya bridge on Brahmaputra, which will reduce travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by four hours, is likely to be opened to traffic before next monsoon season. The road ministry has approved compensation to property owners to get the required land for building the 2-kilometre approach road on Sadiya side for the project.

Once the Rs 938-crore two-lane project is completed, it will be the longest bridge in Asia and will be crucial for defence purposes also.


The bridge is also being strengthened for the passage of army tanks. At present, there is no bridge fortified for passage of tanks around Tinsukia from where troops can cross over to Arunachal Pradesh. Moreover, it will cut time for the armed forces to reach the border in Dibang and Anjaw via Tezpur, which takes two days (about 186 km from Guwahati) now.

The bridge connectivity is also important as Arunachal Pradesh does not have a single operational airport and with China building air strips on its side of the LAC it will come as a shot in the arm for the military. "We will complete work in the next seven to eight months," said an official.Prime Minister Narendra Modi had gone through the visual presentation of this project when he participated in the North Eastern Council meeting in Shillong early this year.The Rs 938 crore 2-lane bridge project (25.8 km) had started in November 2010.

Construction of this bridge in Assam was approved as a part of Rs 24,000 crore Arunachal Pradesh package to improve road connectivity in the border state.

The Dhola–Sadiya Bridge, scheduled to become operational in December 2015, will be the longest bridge in India.It spans the Brahmaputra River to connect the states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and is 9.15 kilometres (5.69 mi) in length.

Construction began in 2011 under the aegis of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in public private partnership (PPP) with Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd. The bridge is scheduled to become operational from December 2015. The project cost around 10.00 billion rupees and will take around 4.5 years to complete. It is 3.55 kilometres (2.21 mi) longer than the Bandra Worli Sea Link in Mumbai making it the longest bridge in India.

The Construction expert team is led by Mr.B.Surya Raju Chief Project Manager,Navayuga Engineering Company ltd, Hyderabad.The project aims to construct a 12.9 metres (42 ft) wide external post tensioned bridge with 183 spans each of 50 metres (160 ft) along with a two lane connecting road from Dhola Bazaar to Islampur Tiniali. When completed this will become the longest river bridge in India across the river, the Lohit.

The expected date of Bridge Operation will be from May-2016.The Connecting Highway is scheduled to be operational from April-2017.

The bridge will reduce the travel time from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh by four hours

@anant_s there is a major thrust on NE. About 05-06 months back, consultation was on regarding major effort in upgradation of airports and rail connections too. Also the thrust on Asian Highway, that was in conjunction with Bangladesh for greater connectivity into SE Asia through Myanmar and Thailand.

Interesting times ahead. Esoecially with interlinking of rivers undertaken and inland water transport a potential thrust under Gadkari
 
Already visited this place. U can't see the full length where it ends. Meanwhile the work is in full swing and engineers inspect every bit of work with their Scorpios running like a king over the bridge. But close for normal people though. U should visit this place at least once. Hope to become operational within one year.

That is a rail cum road bridge and it too is a marvel of civil and bridge engineering.

The design of Bogibeel bridge has 42 pillars with 125 metres (410 ft) spans and a superstructure of composite welded steel truss and reinforced concrete. It is designed to carry a double line broad gauge railway and a 3-lane road on the lower and upper decks. Upon completion it will be the longest bridge over the Brahmaputra and the longest combined rail and road bridge in India. However due to late completion this bridge will be overtaken as longest bridge over Brahmaputra by Dhola-Sadiya Bridge which is a road bridge of length 9.15 KM


The Bogibeel rail / road bridge is being built across the River Brahmaputra in the Dibrugarh district, in the state of Assam in northeast India. The 4.94km bridge is one of the longest river bridges in the country.

The rail-road bridge is being undertaken by the Northeast Frontier Railway, which is a part of Indian Railways. The work on the project began in 2002 and was expected to be completed in seven years. But the bridge project experienced significant time and cost overruns before its construction gained momentum in July 2014.

The project is now scheduled to be completed by March 2017. The originally estimated cost of INR16.7bn (approximately $312m) shot up to INR49.96bn ($810m) by March 2014. Approximately INR30.41bn had been spent on the project until 2014.

Bogibeel bridge location
The bridge is located 17km downstream of the town of Dibrugarh. It will connect Dibrugarh in the south to Lakhimpur in the north. The River Brahmaputra runs to the north of Dibrugarh and is very wide, spanning 10km.

The rail-road bridge is the fourth being built on the river, the others being Pandu Saraighat, Kolia-Bjumuraguri and Naranarayan Setu at Jogighopa - all of them in Assam. The Bogibeel Bridge is the longest structure being built on the River Brahmaputra and will be the country's fourth largest bridge.

I did like it.

But we have a long way to go before we catch up on infrastructure.

OH yes, but Once the Infrastructure has been built, i can imagine NE would have broken several records in Roads and Rail construction. Longest tunnel, Longest Bridge, should be a wonderful sight... :enjoy:
