Looks like Vietnam and Indonesia missed the boat to be EV giant in ASEAN...

I dont think so, Indonesia is the main base of Toyota production beside China, even China Toyota imports engines from Indonesia Toyota. Toyota soon and later will likely enter EV market as well, as of now they are still selling combustion and hybrids cars. Hyundai has also put Indonesia as their main base production in South East Asia and has made factory in here to produce both combustion and EV cars.

Indonesia will also likely become the main EV battery producer in SEA as LG Chem (9 billion USD project) and CATL ( 5 billion USD project) has made MOU with Indonesia that include collaboration with Indonesia Battery state owned company holding. We are negotiating with Tesla currently, dont know whether we can reach a deal or not.

The question is who in ASEAN will buy your EV cars?
Chinese cars have little chance in Vietnam.

Hyundai to move Asia Pacific HQ to Indonesia

HYUNDAI Motor Co is planning to move its regional headquarters (HQ) to Indonesia, according to a report.

Friday, January 8th, 2021 at News | Wheels

A report by wapcar.my recently stated that the company is closing its Asia Pacific regional HQ in Mutiara Damansara in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, to Indonesia in favour of investment incentives offered for electric vehicles (EVs) development in the republic.

The report said the move will be done in stages until year-end. The regional HQ was opened in 2015, housing Hyundai Training Academy that provides enhanced training for all Asia Pacific Hyundai distributors trainers in 33 countries in the region.

It was Hyundai’s second training academy that is fully equipped with the carmaker’s newest dealership space identity standards, following the first establishment in Dubai.

Last November, Hyundai signed a preliminary deal to build a new factory in Indonesia with an investment of US$1.55 billion (RM6.26 billion) until 2030.

Besides Hyundai, Toyota Motor Corp has planned to invest US$2 billion to develop EVs in Indonesia from 2019 until 2023 starting with hybrid vehicles.

“Because the Indonesian government already has an EV development map, Toyota considers Indonesia as a prime EV investment destination,” Toyota president Akio Toyoda said in the statement previously.

Malaysia has plans and initiatives to spur the development of EVs and become a regional hub as provided in the National Automotive Policy 2020 (NAP 2020).

According to Hyundai official (2021) as respond to the news is that Hyundai has already made Indonesia as their Asia Pacific head quarter since 2019 but the shift is not entirely completed and there is a transition period still going on.

But there is still no EV industry in Indonesia. Even if Indonesia gets foreign investment, it is backward. Because you don't even have the ability to make li-ion batteries.

Our state owned battery holding is trying to make whole EV battery ecosystem. All of the foreign investment (MOU stage) with LG Chem, CATL, and possibly Tesla is set to be a collaboration with our state owned battery holding.

Currently our state owned train manufacturer has already been able to make electric tram with around 90 percent components made in Indonesia like electric motor. Battery is still imported though. We have two state owned company that can make electric motor which is PT Pindad and PT PAL and currently making electric motor for power plan.

China is leader in EV. We make high quality battery which even Tesla buys from China. Out batteries can hold more energy while charge faster. And not to mention much safer.

China EV car will be suitable for ASEAN becos of our price. Tesla is only for Europe, USA and China. :enjoy:

but BYD is one of the most advanced battery manufacturers in the world. Asia's most advanced EVs are still in China.

Electric Vehicles need motors, large amount of it.
Motors need Magnets, large amount of it.
Magnets need Rare Earth Elements.

Also Electric Vehicles need Batteries.
Batteries are toxic.
How do you manage the used up batteries?
Without proper solution, your country's population will drink toxic water soon.
Because of this toxicity reason, I don't like EVs.

The battery will be recycled. Any way at this modern world we have already used a lot of batteries.

China had so much foresight to shift its market to EV years ago. Now it is ground zero for the EV market.
