It is true that China has shown dominance in world sports after the Guangzhou Asian Games. As China improves in AG, it is also improving in terms of worldwide competition. They joined the Olympics in 1984 and garnered a total of 32 medals. In 1996, they got 50 and then 59 in Sydney. In 2004, they (China-32 golds) surprised the world by prevailing over Russia (27 golds) in the second spot in terms on gold medal. Their domination had been proven when they won 15 more golds as host than United States for the first time in history of the Olympics. The final tally for the Chinese was 51 golds, 21 silvers and 28 bronzes against 36-38-36 for the Americans. Russia got only 72 medals, the traditional rival of United States, which was the formers lowest output since 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Due to 2008 medal tally results, a lot of sports analysts have predicted that succeeding Olympics will be a head to head battle between US and China.
