Pakistan beat India in Asia World Cup Cricket match at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh Sunday night. The match was so thrilling that Pakistani fans had lost all hopes of any victory till the last over of the match when Pakistan needed more runs than the balls. However, two consecutive sixer shots by cricketer Shahid Khan Afridi turned the tables on Indian team. Pakistan won the match in the end leading to country-wide celebrations not only in Pakistan but also in Indian-held Kashmir till late night.
Apart from performance of the players, the most noteworthy factor leading to supporting Pakistani players was the crowd; Bangladeshis who have been fed on the stories of atrocities of Pakistan during 1971 insurgency funded by India were supporting team Pakistan. The incumbent ruler of Bangladesh, Hasina Wajid, whose father Sheikh Mujeeb led separatist movement, is a bitter enemy of Pakistan and has recently engineered treason cases leading to conviction against those who supported Pakistan during the days when Bangladesh was East Pakistan. After creation of Bangladesh, a narrative was established that Pakistani forces killed and raped millions of Bengalis which has now been challenged by a Bengali author of Indian origin, Sarmila Bose in her book, Dead Reckoning.
The cheering of the crowd and their chanting of slogans, “Pakistan Zindabad” (Long Live Pakistan) gave an impression as if the match was played in Pakistan’s cricket stadium. Pakistan has won several matches against India but each time any Pakistani team plays in Bangladesh, it receives no different support.
Asia Cup: Bangladesh crowd was “Home Crowd” for Team Pakistan
