The European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, has said talks with Iran on its nuclear programme were "constructive and useful".

The next round of talks with Tehran will take place in Baghdad on 23 May, she said.

The first discussions between Iran and six world powers for 15 months have been taking place in Istanbul.

Iran says its nuclear programme is peaceful, but critics suspect it of seeking to develop weapons.

Speaking at the end of Saturday's talks between the six countries - the US, UK, France, China, Russia and Germany - and Iran, Baroness Ashton said that future talks would be guided by the "principle of a step-by-step approach and reciprocity".

She said that Iran has the right to a peaceful nuclear programme, and that the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty must be a "key basis" for future talks.

Baroness Ashton said she and the Iranian chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, were united in their desire to pursue a long-term solution to the problem.

Mr Jalili described Saturday's talks as being based on co-operation and "very successful".

This is indeed good news - a peaceful approach is the best way forward - now the war mongers go home and enjoy the break...

Lovely. Iran finally broke their back. They have come down from their high horses. Persistence and self confidence brings victory. We should learn it from them. Supply routes should not open until Pakistan gets a similar a nuclear deal as west gave to India. 65 modern western western power nuclear reactors with free access to world's uranium reserves to fuel them. West has become too weak. It is time to take initiative over issues.

I think that's being a little too optimistic. Besides, nuclear energy is not a safe and secure source of energy, i'm more for Wind and Solar as well as coal.

Pakistan is to precious to be tainted with radiation and waste, the nuclear reactors we already have are sufficient, no more nuclear reactors!

Clean and secure solar/wind energy is the way to go!!!

Well they need us more than we need them specially in Afghanistan. So it is time to make a deal with them and get things straight. India did it so should we.

Modern reactors are very safe. France gets 80% of its electricity from nuclear power plants and has not had a major accidents. In fact French, Canadian and German reactor technologies are the best and have never caused any major event. Fewer people in the world have died because of nuclear accidents than they die from coal power plants pollution. Not only that but if Pakistani engineers are good enough to run Chinese reactors without any accident whatsoever in history I guess the French and Canadian reactors are going to be super safe. And we have to take the issue of cost as well. Solar and wind generated electricity is several times more expensive than nuclear generated electricity:

True, you make a good point about the cheap cost of nuc energy compared to solar and wind energy but i'm still concerned about the security risks. Keep in mind that Pakistan has witnessed powerful earthquakes and floods in the past and i'm sure you are aware of what happened in Japan last year.

The cost of recovering from nuc disaster is much greater (God forbid we ever go through such a crisis).

I dnt think any other nation can get the deal that Iran is going to get in the next coming months. Are the countries that you are thinking ready to give martyrs like Iran did ? an i am not speaking about normal border soldiers, but professors and scientists. Are they ready to engage the most powerfull hostile intelligence agencies (Mossad,CIA) ? Are they also ready to endure endless years of sanctions and threats ? think about it again. Only Iran can achieve this

I hope by these talks some pressure can get lifted off Iran
