Ashraf blasts Pakistan for "embarassing loss"

Nasim Ashraf, the chairman of the PCB, has criticised the Pakistan side after their embarrassing 140-run loss to India on Tuesday.

In a letter written to team manager Talat Ali, a copy of which was published in Dawn, Ashraf was especially severe on Shoaib Malik's captaincy and fitness, and picked out Kamran Akmal for "unsporting behaviour" after he claimed catch that he hadn't taken cleanly.

"Last night's performance against India in which we lost by over 100 runs was embarrassing," Ashraf, who will fly to Dhaka on Saturday to have a meeting with the team management, wrote. "It is not a question of losing a match but our overall performance and the lack of resolve and commitment bothered me the most."

Ashraf has sent copies of the letter to coach Lawson and Malik and asked the team management to respond in 24 hours "so that timely action can be taken before the next match against India [assuming the sides meet in the final]."

He questioned why an additional spinner was not included in the team and inquired about the fitness of Malik. "The previous game against Bangladesh had clearly highlighted the characteristics of the track in Dhaka, that the spinners were going to play crucial role. The team selected for India game had four fast bowlers. Also, you [referring to Ali] clearly told me that Malik was 100% fit and therefore was the second spinner in the side. What happened to that? Why did Malik not bowl?"

Ashraf then turned his attention to the team's strategy, saying that they looked "paralysed" in the field after the flying start made by India. "Nobody suggested to the captain that he must have a mini conference with the vice-captain and other players - junior or senior - and take corrective action. Even the commentators were talking as to the possibility of changing the bowling and bringing in Shahid Afridi at an early stage."

Meanwhile, Akmal's place in the side looks to in danger after Ashraf called for his ouster. "[The] wicketkeeping was pathetic, especially after Kamran Akmal dropped the catch and pretended that he had held on to it. This is unsporting behaviour but perhaps one has to give him the benefit of the doubt as he may not have realised that the ball had slipped out from his hand, which was picked up by the cameras.

"I do not want such behaviour from any Pakistani player. Please warn everyone. We ought to be looking at playing another 'keeper."

He said that fast bowlers should be advised not to "overextend themselves" referring to the 38 extras conceded. "They should have been instructed to bowl strictly to a line and length and to contain especially when the batsmen were in such full cry. It seemed as if we were just continuing with tactics that were clearly not working. We need to be more proactive on the field."

The team's body language also earned Ashraf's ire." Except for a few on the field, the body language was not competitive. We were smiling and joking as if we were some junior team which was happy just to be given the privilege of playing a top team. This has to stop."

He directed the team management to conduct a fitness test on Malik "so as to determine clearly whether he can bowl full 10 overs." He also asked the touring management to decide on the playing XI for a probable summit clash with India, and, to request for an additional spinner if they needed one.

The only positives Ashraf picked out was Malik's 67-ball 53 and the bowling of Afridi, though he felt the latter "threw his wicket away in a most irresponsible manner," after making his way to 23.

This is a game.

What is so embarrassing about?

India has just emerged from a fabulous practice of the game, unlike Pakistan.

Therefore, the Indians were better practised.

Why make such a hue and cry?

The PCB should themselves start a similar tournament to keep its players fighting trim, but they won't. And they will readily condemn all others for their own faults!

Actually the problem is that Shoaib Malik is taking decisions himself. There are lots of good players in the domestic circuit like Shahid Yusuf, Khalid Latif, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Fawad Alam, Khurram Manzoor and Mansoor Amjad which are being neglected. You are right to say that PCB should have taken actions before.

It was the first time that Pakistan lost to India by a margin that huge. So obviously it would be embarresing a bit. India otoh has had several 100+ runs defeat at the hands of Pakitan so nothing seems embarresing anymore.

I heard so much about Wahab Riaz from my Pak collegues. What happened!!! He was like a lamb before the wolves. Every Indian batsmen had him for dinner.

Most of the times people say about players without watching them because no TV channel shows domestic cricket of Pakistan but I think you should note that how players are being utilized like Fawad Alam is a batting all-rounder, he has the average of over 50 in domestic cricket but Malik is using him as a bowling all-rounder.

Wahab Riaz is fine, he had a bad day. He just needs more experience. Just a little more technique and he will be good.

Duh!

What is so embarrassing about?

140 Runs. Are you kidding me?

There is no hue or cry. Its a proper procedure a chairman should take. Very much needed in the current situation of the Pakistan cricket.

The PCB should themselves start a similar tournament to keep its players fighting trim, but they won't. And they will readily condemn all others for their own faults!

How do you know they wont?

Heard of PPL?

He made it a bad day. The lad wanted to be a hero. He was clearly trying too hard just to prove a point, overstepping in almost every over. Against the likes of Sehwag simply stick to the line & length & not try to dominate. Sehwag on his day could make even Ntini & Steyn look amateur. This is where captain should've briefed him.

I think the PCB heads should keep cool for a bit. Let the players play the tour for now and then have post game analysis sessions. I see absolutely no point in berating key players right after a bad game. Malik is an unexperienced captain and maybe not the best choice for the position; however he does occupy it right now and should be left alone for the time being.

Heavens have not fallen.

Pakistan has repeatedly defeated India in hockey!

So, does it mean the end of the world?

Webmaster,

I think you all are doing much ado about nothing.

140 runs is no great shakes.

I have not heard of the PPL.

Better team on that day won. Good thing about Indian team was it was not boasting unlike Lawson for pakistan who was confident that pakistan will handover 150 run defeat to India. But it backfired.
Now Ashraf is rubbing salt to the wound. But winning and defeat is part and parcel of the game.

I, GUSS pakistan.... lacks depth in bowling, SHOAIB AKHTAR , a bad boy but most experinced fast bowler... was out, umar gul, was he only 1 there to do all, its the time that pakistan.. should mix old (experince) with new(raw) talent...... with some formula....... not with the likes or dislikes of the PCB CHAIRMAN????

DNa, Malik, and Lawson have to go. They are not letting youngsters a chance to perform. I have nothing against Malik, in fact im a huge fan of him. But he can't captain a side. He needs to be more aggressive and show some guts. Younis has not been performing for a while, so let Fawad come at 3 or 4, like india does. Malik needs to go upto #3.

Oh well, its just a dream.

Pakistan Cricket Board sacks Saleem Altaf after email leak to media
Friday, 13 June 2008 05:30 Pakistan Daily - Breaking Pakistan News

Pakistan on Thursday sacked a high-profile cricket official who said he had been accused of leaking a confidential email to the media which criticised the team.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that former fast bowler Saleem Altaf, who was overseeing the 2011 World Cup to be hosted in the subcontinent, was fired, but a top official played down the incident.

“Altaf’s services were no more required but I would not say he was accused of leakage to the media,” said PCB chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi.

But Altaf said he was sacked after local media published an email by Pakistan’s cricket chief accusing the national team of lacking commitment after they suffered their biggest-ever defeat against arch-rivals India this week.

“I have worked to the best of sincerity and honesty but today PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf called me to his office and accused me of leaking news to the media,” Altaf told.

“He gave me the option of resigning or else said that he would sack me,” Altaf added.

Altaf, 64, who played 21 Tests for Pakistan in the 1970s as a medium fast bowler, was made director for special projects after serving as chief executive of the PCB until September last year. Altaf said he would consult an attorney.

“After I left Ashraf’s room he came to my office and told me to read the transcript of a taped conversation which had my voice. He accused me of leaking secrets to the media,” Altaf said.

“I replied that most of the things in the transcript were public knowledge and nothing is proved in the transcript. I will consult my lawyer and then decide my course of action,” said Altaf.

India thrashed Pakistan by 140 runs in the tri-series match held in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Tuesday. They posted a formidable 330-8 and then bowled Pakistan out for a paltry 190.

“The performance against India was embarrassing,” Ashraf wrote in the email published in the local media.

“It is not a question of losing a match but our overall performance and the lack of resolve and commitment bothered me the most,” it added.

The email, which was addressed to manager Talat Ali and copied to captain Shoaib Malik and Pakistan’s Australian coach Geoff Lawson, demanded swift action.

It was unclear how Altaf was alleged to have obtained the email.

“Please discuss these points and give us your considered response within the next 24 hours so that timely action can be taken before the next match against India on the 14th which will be the final,” the message said.

India take on Bangladesh on Thursday, with Pakistan set to meet their foes again on Saturday.

Ashraf criticised the selection of the team, which did not include a regular spinner.

“The previous game against Bangladesh had clearly highlighted the characteristics of the track in Dhaka, that the spinners were going to play a crucial role,” said Ashraf of Pakistan’s 70-run win over the hosts on Sunday.

Altaf’s sacking is the latest controversy to hit Pakistan’s cricket set-up.

Paceman Mohammad Asif was seized at Dubai airport on June 1 on charges of possessing an illegal substance. He is still in the Gulf emirate, where authorities are deciding whether to take any action.
