PRESIDENT Duterte’s first foreign trip next month would surely be a big political and media event, Malacañang said on Sunday.

This early, several leaders from neighboring countries have expressed eagerness to meet with Mr. Duterte during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) meeting in Vientiane, Laos, according to Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar.

“We all know President Duterte is the most talked-about leader in Asean and around the world,” Andanar told government-owned dzRB radio.

“We expect the international media companies to mob the President in Laos to talk to him,” he added.

Mr. Duterte’s weeklong trip would be his first abroad since winning the May 9 elections. He had previously said he would avoid frequent overseas travelduring his six-year term due to his advanced age.

The 71-year-old Chief Executive will fly to Brunei for a working visit on Sept. 4-5 before heading to the Asean summit in Laos on Sept. 6-8.

Mr. Duterte will then go to Indonesia for atwo-day working visit on Sept. 8-9.

Bussinessmen, who are optimistic about the Philippines’ stature under President Rody Duterte often compare him to the iron-fisted, Lee Kuan Yew-style governance in Singapore.

Statesman Lee Kuan Yew often clashed with Western media over his draconian policies back in his blooming thriving.

“We are in a very good spot. The pronouncement of government prioritizing infrastructure spending, accelerating it and cutting red tape, solving peace and order, I think all point to very good prospects ahead,” – EastWest Bank president Tony Moncupa told Reuters.

SVP Atty. Mike Toledo Philex Mining is confident about the sharp anti-corruption campaign of President Duterte and his DENR Secretary Gina Lopez who “will weed out the bad miners from the many good and ethical miners, thus giving hope to this important industry,” said Wilson Lee Flores of Philippine Star.

“The miners are hopeful that the Philippines will benefit from $34 billion in projects to be developed in the next six years,” Flores added.

In connection, Atty. Toledo said that the Philippines has been blessed by God with some of the world’s richest mineral resources, that environmentally sound mining can unleash this natural wealth to enrich far-flung rural areas and can support Duterte’s dream of Philippine industrialization.

Furthermore, Flores explained that “not only are private businesses optimistic about the Philippine future, even non-governmental organizations like the global environmental NGO Greenpeace are.”

“At present, the Philippines produces 29 percent of its electricity requirements through renewable sources, with the Department of Energy hoping to increase this to 40 percent by 2020.”

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is scheduled to visit Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia.

The Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir said presidential visits are common. “It’s a tradition for new presidents to visit [Southeast Asia],” he said Thursday at the Foreign Ministry office building, Jakarta.

The Foreign Ministry has yet to confirm when the meeting between Duterte and President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will take place. “We will check President Jokowi’s schedule first,” Arrmanatha Nasir said.

President Jokowi and President Duterte are likely to meet at a the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos, on September 6-8, 2016.

Director for ASEAN Politics and Security, the Foreign Ministry, Chandra Widya Yudha said the meetings will be held back to back. “The plenary session will be the 28th meeting whereas the retreat session will be the 29th meeting,” Chandra said.

In the 28th ASEAN Summit, all member states will discuss the implementation of the AEC blueprint 2025. In the 29th ASEAN Summit, regional and international economic issues will become the topics. Indonesia will raise maritime issues in the conference. “The main topics are the resilience and relevance of ASEAN,” Chandra said.

Duterte ready to face China on territorial issue

MANILA, Philippines – President Duterte last night said he is willing to conduct bilateral talks with China, but within the context of the decision of a UN-backed tribunal awarding sovereign rights to the Philippines in the dispute over South China Sea.

“I will only bring the issue when we are together face to face. Because if we quarrel with them now and you claim sovereignty… they might just not even want to talk,” he said.

Duterte made the statement after he was asked if he would be bringing up the issue during his tour to ASEAN countries in the next few weeks.

He noted former president Fidel Ramos, as the country’s special envoy, has gained headway in thawing the relations between the two countries.

“Ramos is there paving the way for the good… of anybody or any other country. But we maintain good relations with China. Let us create an environment where we can sit down and talk directly,” Duterte said.

“That is the time I would say that, ‘we proceed from here.’ We proceed from this judgment,” Duterte said, referring to the award from the UN arbitration court in favor of the Philippines.

Last month, the arbitration court in The Hague ruled that China had no historic title over the South China Sea and had breached the Philippines’ sovereign rights there. The decision infuriated Beijing, which dismissed the court’s authority.

But Beijing has been keen to get diplomacy back on track since.

Duterte, however, reiterated going to war against China to force the issue is not an option.

“What if (China) says, ‘I do not want to quarrel or even speak with you’? Can we do anything? Can we declare war? It is not an option,” he said.

“I would not be stupid to do that. It will only be a massacre for all... war is not an option nowadays.”

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte has no plans of bringing up the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) dispute during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit to be held in Laos in September.

"No. I will only bring up the issue when we are together face to face," he said during a press conference on Wednesday, August 17, at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.

Duterte is set to attend the ASEAN Summit in early September, the first international summit he will be participating in as President.

The maritime dispute with China has been a topic of the summit in previous years as several ASEAN countries are pursuing claims over the body of water.

But Duterte said he did not want to make unnecessary "noise" that could endanger chances of bilateral talks with China.

"If you quarrel with them now and you claim sovereignty, make noise here and there, they might not just want even to talk," he said.

The President said he prefers to "maintain good relations with China."

"Let us create an environment where we can sit down and talk directly. Then that is the time I would say, 'We proceeed from here. We proceed from this,'" said Duterte.

He thinks picking a fight through the ASEAN Summit may only complicate the already delicate situation between the two countries.

"Eh kung awayin ko 'yan, sabihin nila 'ayaw ko makipagaway, bahala kayo sa buhay ninyo,' (If I argue with them, then they say, 'I don't want to fight, nevermind the talks.'), can we do anything? Wala na tayong magawa. (We can't do anything.)," he said.

The ASEAN Summit next month comes after China said it would welcome Duterte's envoy, former President Fidel Ramos, to Beijing. The Duterte administration is hoping it can begin formal bilateral talks with the Chinese government after the Philippines won a historic case against China over the West Philippine Sea.

President Rodrigo Duterte is hopeful that he can do something for convicted Filipino drug courier Mary Jane Veloso.

“I pray I can do something for her,” Duterte told the 129 Filipino workers repatriated from Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

The president is set to visit Indonesia on Sep.8 to 9 after attending the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos.

Indonesia is part of Duterte’s ASEAN trip, which also includes Brunei.

Veloso was arrested at the Yogyakarta airport in Indonesia in 2010 for carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin.

She was supposed to be executed on April 25, 2015 but was temporarily spared after the woman who allegedly recruited her to act as drug courier surrendered to authorities.
