As Rafale talks progress, race for fighter jets begins again - The Hindu

Even as India and France negotiate a final agreement for direct purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets, there is a renewed push by the aircraft makers left out in the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) contest to re-enter the race.

‘Make in India’ offer
At least three of the contenders — Eurofighter, Lockheed Martin and Saab — have renewed offers for production of their aircraft under ‘Make in India.’

With the government paring down the Rafale deal from 126 to 36 and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar stating that “another light aircraft” could be procured to replace the MiG-21, besides accelerating the development of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), MK-II companies see an opportunity for a comeback.

Official sources said Saab offered India the next generation Gripen NG with full technology transfer, besides collaboration in the development of LCA MK-II. Saab was also exploring the possibility of partnering private players to jointly produce Gripen in India, the sources said.

While Germany has consistently been pitching Eurofighter Typhoon, Lockheed Martin has renewed its offer of making F-16 in India. This offer was renewed last month when top officials from BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin met Mr. Parrikar.

Govt. yet to respond
At the political level, the issue was raised at Mr. Parrikar’s recent discussions with his German counterpart Ursula von der Leyen and Swedish counterpart Peter Hultqvist. However, the government has not responded so far.

Air Force officials pointed to the already diverse inventory of the IAF and two new additions in the pipeline — LCA and Rafale. One official said more Rafale fighters should to be procured to make operational sense since two squadrons were too less.

Looks like India is becoming the Most Desired Hunk globally. With so many attractive proposals, one may find difficulty in choosing the best one. :smitten::smitten::smitten::smitten:

All this re entering of of others contenders again is a possible manipulation by these contenders to kill Rafale deal

wasnt i was saying the same thing since last three months :pop:

you are right and this lobby is very strong with roots in defense ministry too so hopefully at least first lot of 36 Rafales is signed by August-September

Just don't grow old in making a decision or the proposals will stop. Dont the French have to supply the Egyptians and Qatar before they even get to you guys. I think Indian policy makers are really confused right now cant make up their mind.

Right Now, as the things stands Rafale will be in a hurry to send planes to India. They know India has other options. Moreover India needs some of them immediately therefore both sides are testing each other to get a good deal for this particular lot of 36 planes.
But you are right that so many choices do create confusion.

We should go for F16 s (used or Brand new) a better option to replace mig 21s and concentrate on AMCA.

LCA Mark 2 program should be speeded up. Naval arm should be given priority Since we will have 4 to 5 squadrons of them in the near future.

Govt. should spend the money wisely with out going for too expensive fighter jets if ToT is not there in the agreement.

Is F 16's still be offered ?

Should settle nothing less than local manufactured F35's.

Marine pilots recently dropped dozens of live bombs from the F-35B joint strike fighter for the first time, bringing the aircraft a step closer to its long-anticipated rollout.

Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 dropped 30 bombs over five days without a hitch in late June near Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona. It was a first for the squadron testing the aircraft's capabilities, and Marines said they can hit targets in little- to no-visibility.

That showed that the F-35B is ready and able to conduct direct strikes in a battlefield environment, , said Maj. Christopher Trent, VMFA-121's pilot training officer and one of 14 pilots who flew several of the test sorties..

Israel and other nations are going for F35's and are retiring F16's.

F16 is a good dogfighter which is in need for IAF in case of Chinese attacks. A cheaper option but a better option.

The Ball is in Rafale''s court. No point in blaming others when Dassault are pricing themselves out of the picture.

When we can buy from United States directly F 16 even used ones then why to go for Israeli ones ?

For spares and other equipment again United states have to supply them .
