ASTARA, Azerbaijan -- Every day, up to 3,500 Azerbaijanis gather at the border with Iran, waiting for hours to cross while crowded like cattle between chain-link fences.

What is driving so many people from this oil-rich country to endure such humiliation in exchange for a brief visit to their southern neighbor?

In a word: food.

"Why shouldn't I go to Iran? We buy everything we need there -- meat, butter," she said. "These products are very expensive in our country. We cannot afford to buy these things here on our tiny pensions."

Iran today reinstituted some of the regulations but still allows Azerbaijanis to take up to 5 kilograms of food out of the country.

A woman wearing a flowered scarf who was waiting at the border said Azerbaijanis are becoming increasingly desperate.

"If they close the Iranian border, we will die," she said. "People will kill each other."

Edit: Azerbaijan's economy nearly two times better than Iran..... 3000 Azeri Turk coming to Iran to shop from cheap prices means that Iran is a cheap market for richer Azerbaijan...

It's a big deal cuz our Russian Azari friend here (ASQ) likes to claim that Azarbaijan is the most fantastic country on earth and every Iranian Azari dreams of Aliyev Republic. In reality, they can't even feed themselves.

That's why it's a big deal.

Also, in Norway people won't die of hunger. In the interview the Azari woman says that if Iran closes the border, they're going to die of hunger b/c they literally can't afford to buy food.

Because, Iran is angry at Azerbaijan and this is somesort of victory I guess.

This has been happening since the day the two countries lifted the VISA restrictions. People were lining up the first day VISA restrictions were lifted.

The Iranian Riyal has lost its value thanks to 32 years of sanctions and embargoes. We have a reason why, what's their reason for not even being able to feed themselves? Our economy is top notch without all these sanctions. We have tons of heavy industry all over the country and we produce every food available on this planet.

btw, why is it that whenever a Pakistani moves to another country, he/she becomes more extreme than the citizens of that country?

You're a pakistani in Turkey that defends Turkey like a robot
We have a bunch of of pakistanis in Saudi that do the same.
There are also other ones in Iran and UAE.

According to US report Israelis have secured Azari airbase to be used against Iran. That has implication for Russia and SCO as well because that same base NATO can use later on for their strategic agenda in central Asian region. Unless Iran, Russia, Turkey and perhaps China kick these elements out they would face issue in their backyard.

People in my country are stupid... they believe in the illusion of "ummah" or brotherhood... shias would support iran... the wahabis support KSA... everybody supports Turkiye.

As for me... i want good relations with every country except for india bcoz of IOK.
