A group of French suburbs, including one with past links to violent extremism, have experienced another night of violence and arson after a resident was reportedly assaulted while in police custody.

Daytime protests followed by nighttime attacks have followed the arrest on Thursday of a 22-year-old man identified as ‘Theo’, who according to claims was penetrated anally with a police truncheon while under arrest. While police report violence in the French suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois after Theo made a plea from his hospital bed for calm, attacks have spread to other areas.

North-Eastern Paris suburbs, including Tremblay-en-France, Montfermeil, Clichy-sous-Bois, Villepinte, and Blanc-Mesnil, experienced attacks on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, reports Le Figaro, with police stations attacked, Molotov cocktails thrown, and bins set alight.

These suburbs of the heavily migrant-populated Seine-Saint-Denis region of Paris have become well known for violence, drug crime, and religious extremism. Terror raids in the area followed the 2015 Paris Bataclan Attacks.

Officers would not give the exact number of cars torched overnight, but gave a figure of “around 20” destroyed over what has come to be known in France as the “Theo Affair”.

Police made 17 arrests on Tuesday night, five of which took place in the Aulnay-sous-Bois suburb where Theo lives. The arrests were predominantly for “outrages” against public order, damage by violent means, and violence against a person holding public authority.

A number have been hospitalised or injured, including “several” children who suffered carbon dioxide poisoning after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a nursery school, and a bus driver whose vehicle was attacked.

The violence came hours after French President François Hollande, soon to leave office with the coming elections in which he is not seeking reelection, travelled to meet Theo. Speaking to a camera during the visit, the President praised the young man for having been “always known for his exemplary behaviour”.

An investigation into what happened to Theo while under arrest continues. Four special police officers were arrested after he claimed a truncheon was forcibly inserted into his buttocks, causing “serious” injury. One has been charged with rape.

1000 pounds on Theo being a violent thug who deserves worst

Let's see what happened.

Some youths are just sitting and wandering here. Nothing you would tell me. But a patrol car with 4 new officers in it is coming and one of the youth start giving signals (by shouting loudly) to the dealers that the cops are here. (indirectly) The officers decide to get out of their car and check their IDs and want to arrest the one who signaled the police's presence to the dealers. They are sure to detain the guy who did it,a friend of 'Theo' named 'Sirou'. The youth is arrogant and doesn't want his ID checked and have an argument with the officers. 'Sirou' nears his face near the officer's and is pushed back. 'Sirou' said he was slapped. The officers tell that 'Theo' came in and violently told the officers "You don't do it. I don't give a f*ck about your ID check, stop pissing us off, don't do it". A very different scenario for 'Theo' who told he came peacefully in between his friend and the officers and said "Why are you doing that, you will escalate the situation for nothing, not worth it".

Then the situation got confused and 'Theo' is resisting the arrest and is seen being violently pushed to the ground, with an officer under him while others try to control him. In the struggle his pant is going down at above his legs. Pepper spray is used which made 'Theo' standing up and one of the officer is hitting him with a baton. He is hitting at the level of his legs in hope to make him fall. Because the guy is a 1,90M strong black guy.

'Theo' says that the officer put his baton in his @ss. Seems that he was hit so hard that the baton pierced his underwear and hit his @nus. The officers were not aware of the damage done during their struggle. Accidental or intentional ? Only the justice will tell. Not sure that newly recruited officers's hobby would be to penetrate people with batons.

Always according to the relatives,he was nice, had no problems, isn't involved in anything.... lol. The usual thing. "My son isn't a criminal,he always said hello".

@Nilgiri @flamer84 And the worst and humiliating thing is Hollande coming to his hospital bed.

If you wanted the definition of putting your pant down, surrendering, cowardice, you would find pictures and names of French politicians. Not sure I've ever seen Hollande going to support French police officers injured in the line of duty at their hospital beds.

Gee a politician acting so shamelessly...quelle surprise!

BTW, how is the pre-election mood shaping up? I heard fillon popularity took a big tumble because of the ongoing "moneypenny" scandal?

It's the routine I would say.

I myself wouldn't pay much attention to popularity surveys, polls and whatsoever,as they proved to be wrong elsewhere in the world and much recently in France,as you can see to Fillon and Hamon's elections. Both were outsiders and finally became favourites.

But talking about them,Fillon's popularity took a hit mainly because of his wife's 'scandal'. The medias and his opponents are trying to attack him through his wife because they couldn't find something against him. Pretty vicious I would say.

Macron is surely gaining some popularity (but will it last?) now we would have to see if he is capable of stealing the Socialist Party's voters or from other leftist parties. In polls,he is currently neck and neck with Fillon for the 2nd place (Macron leading according to some ) while Marine Le Pen is well above. Every polls is giving Le Pen in the second round, but would be defeated by whoever is the other candidate.

Hamon is proposing Melanchon (Left party) and Jadot (Greens) to unite and make the left win in 2017,but both are probably unlikely to agree.

The official campaign didn't start yet and everything is possible til the elections. Interesting times ahead.
