Army to have Apache attack choppers in Mountain Strike Corps on China border

The mountain strike corps sanctioned for the Army for deployment along the China border will have an aviation brigade that may include the Apache attack choppers. The corps was sanctioned by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) yesterday at a cost of Rs 65,000 crore and would involve raising of around 50,000 troops for it.

The new corps may have the Apache attack choppers as the Defence Ministry has given permission to the Army for having a separate case for procuring the American-manufactured helicopters, sources told PTI here.

The Army and the IAF were engaged in a tussle for control over the attack helicopter fleet in which the government decided in favour of the former. The two forces then contested for the 22 Apache attack choppers being procured from the US by the IAF but the Defence Ministry decided that they would remain with the IAF and the future assets would be given to the Army. The government has given permission to the Army for pursuing a separate Foreign Military Sales-route procurement on the issue, they said.

Under the plans, the new strike corps will have two Mountain Infantry divisions including around 18 infantry battalions along with independent brigades of artillery, air defence and elements of combat engineers and mechanised forces. The corps will take around six years to be raised along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and new formations would be raised from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh.

I am sure the total number of these helicopters will be 100s according to the needs they described and also we can see some A-129 or Tiger too in future...

We Indians are like women ( no offence meant) - we must talk and can keep nothing inside our stomachs.

Let the bloody formation be - it is still on paper .

IAF had the requirement of 2 x squads (22 helis) to replace 2 x Mi 35 squads
IA has the requirement for 3 x squads, 1 for each strike corps

And since the IAF once will be diverted to IA, 1 x additional squadron will be added to the to fulfill IA's requirements.

Moutain warfare is some serious $hit.You require a ratio of 7:1 to be the agressor and if the defender has mean machines like M777 and Apache combined with Javelin and Sukhoi in the sky..i would say it would be very very very difficult to beat India keeping in mind that the Indian and Pakistani soldiers are much more experienced in mountainous warfare than the PLA soldiers due to the bloody histroy the former have had in various wars.

And yeah,F-INSAS to bring some edge to our troops in the comming years.

Names of arms doesn't make us safer, we need to invest in basic things too. Our infrastructure in that areas are far behind, we still have no light tanks, tank destroyers or self-propelled howitzers, another field where our opponent is fare ahead. What we also need is the air transport capability and special corps, that can be switched between the borders, to quickly support the forces in a certain area. All this is lacking, which makes holding such a vast borderline very difficult, against an enemy that not only has numbers, but also several other advantages.

According to a source ( dont ask ) IA wish to maintain 1:3 ratio between apache and LCH with 2 Longbows in every sqd.

So IA requirement is going to increase over the time. Transfer of IAF controlled apaches is highly unlikely in next 5/6 years

Add the 179 LCHs to this.

And we will have enough firepower to take down any conventional threat.


Only, we need a government strong enough to use these assets.

What figure are we looking at?

For now there is nothing concrete news on number of Sqds. Last news was (6+10). If thats the target then mimimum 50 apaches.
But I think IA will go for more than 10 attack sqd in NE.

Indeed they will go for a very big number of LCH and armed Rudras but Apache is the best of kind and the sensors packages is one if the best in world. So it is better to couple those to our LCHs.
