In a first that will give a major boost to the Army’s aviation wing, India is planning to procure helicopter-borne early warning systems for the land force. The final specifications for the system are being chalked out, following which a tender process will be initiated this year.

The new system could be fitted on board the Army’s existing Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) and will give formation commanders an insight into enemy territory while serving as warning systems for approaching aircraft and armoured units.

Sources said the Army is in the final stages of ordering the new system and is considering involving the Indian private sector in the programme. The other option is to rope in Defence Public Sector Unit, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), to design and develop the system.

The project, which would involve developing a new system in collaboration with a foreign partner, can be lucrative for the Indian defence industry, as the final order would be for a large number of the early warning systems.

The new systems would give a fillip to the Army’s aviation wing that has seen a steady growth in the past few years. Starting with the small Chetak/Cheetah single-engine choppers, Army aviation is now operating the ALH and is set to order a new fleet of light attack helicopters that are being developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The early warning systems would be integrated with attack helicopter squadrons that the Army plans to induct in coming years and will act as valuable force multipliers.

While the Air Force does operate early warning systems, it does not have any such helicopter-borne systems that are vital for close-in, ground combat situations where enemy armour and rotary wing aircraft operate.

Meanwhile, the Army recently won a tussle with the Air Force on control over attack helicopter squadrons. Traditionally operated by the Air Force, the Army has them under its operational control and has now been selected for operating them also as is the norm world over.

That's big news. This would mean an additional order for dhruvs, additional requirement of skilled pilots. The army has come to love the dhruv it seems, since they are using it for so many varied roles.

However are these really early warning systems, or something like a JSTARS, but much more limited? Which other armies operate helis in early warning role? I know the IN does.

These could provide excellent battlefield knowledge and command, much like the AEWACS provide the air force with command and control of airspace. I think if this takes off, it will prove to be a huge force multiplier, and the fighting efficiency of each unit would be lethal. And since these are locally made dhruvs, we can make as many of them as we want, without straining the economy, since the money will be spent here.

Hmm...Interesting development... A good Plan. Wonder what IAF has to say about this. Looks like a mini airforce in making.

Naval Dhruv was integrated with LRDE super vision 2000 radar

Something similar may be done for IA requirement.

how is DRDO coming up with such miniature radars ? I am sure RnD team is on it.. This will be a game changer !!!

Good development, as long as they buy an Indian helicopter with an Indian radar.

Actually DRDO is doing very well on this front and its SV2000 radar is currently in use in naval KA-25

It will be developed in collaboration with a foreign partner, as the article says:

Good news :D
But no mention of detection range. Anyone know about the range of similar platform ???

I think the Army is looking for GMTI Radar system and media is reporting it as early warning system.
Couple of good systems are available in market : ELM-2054 radar system, developed by ELTA and AN/ZPY-1 STARLite by Northrop Grumman...

Navel Version and Coast guard version share the same configuration, The naval variant (also used by the Coast Guard) will feature the SV2000 maritime patrol radar developed by DRDO's Electronics & Radar Development Establishment (LRDE) for surveillance. The radar has the capability to detect and track airborne targets, sea surface targets (i.e. frigates) and sub surface targets (i.e. submarines) under sea clutter at a range more than 50 nautical miles (92.6 km; 57.58 miles). The radar is optimised to detect and track targets which have small RCS (Radar Cross Sections) like sea skimmer missiles (i.e. Exocet anti-ship missile) and low flying aircraft under sea and weather clutter conditions.

France was using a similar system in 90's but thats probably cancelled by now. But the system was based on Cougar helicopter.
