A major general of the Indian Army has landed in trouble for singing paeans to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.

Inaugurating a three-day "know your army" exhibition at the Police Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday, general officer commanding (GOC) of Golden Katar Division, Major General I.S. Singha said Modi has all the qualities of a successful army commander.

"His programmes are aimed at development of both the state and the nation," Singha said and went on to add, "Like in the army, he maintains deadline for completion of work and ensures that the target is achieved within the set time."

Singha did not just stop at that and went on to seek favour from the chief minister, asking him to provide land for setting up housing welfare societies for ex-servicemen in Ahmedabad. "Such schemes are available in all other states," Singha said.

His comments, though, did not go down well with the army headquarters in New Delhi which has sought a response from the major general.

A senior official in the army's South Block headquarters said: "He (Singha) might have been showing courtesy to the chief minister at the public gathering. But if he has actually said what has been reported, it will certainly be considered inappropriate."

Considering that the army remains above politics, Singha's statement is bound to cause ripples in the political and military circles.

"We have to first establish that he has actually said what has been reported, because he was speaking in Hindi which was then translated into English," the army officer said.

Modi, in his address, urged the security forces to maintain vigil in Gujarat as the state shared boundaries with Pakistan.

"Gujarat is a border state. It shares border, both land and sea, with Pakistan. And at a time like this, when the neighbouring country has become
hostile, there is much more need for the security forces to be alert," Modi said.

The Gujarat chief minister further said that there should be better co-ordination between the army, navy and air force for securing the nation.

I just don't get it...i mean it was the personnel opinion GOC and not an official stand of Indian Army. Why the hell IA getting themselves dragged in this political war ?? They should have said it was a personnel opinion. I mean we call ourselves champion of human rights and our senior army officials are not allowed to express his opinion on public forum ??

Personaaly i think if you will around in the whole country, you will find millions of people saying the same thing. Its true that Modi is doing everything just like what army does. Also its immature of attaching IA to Gujrat riots. Modi's involvement in those riots were not proven yet, although i am not saying he was not involved but so was Congress in Sikh riots.

Dont you get it ?? It is only the Gandhi family that must be praised (like what FM Sam Manekshaw did to Indira Ghandi) and if it is any other politicians they are in for some serious trouble.

Man, have you read the whole report. After praising Modi, he asked for funds for retired army personnel. He is a smart man. It was a right move. Makkhanbaji karni padti hai kai baar.

If our government gives whatever our army asks and that too on time and that too without begging, then they wouldn't have to do boot polish.

Army should be always above the politics. If the officer praises the CM its good but if he praises Modi than it should be taken care of.

Why would govt give whatever army asks?

Why not...is it wrong to ask for new artillery or a bigger aviation wing decade after decade ?? But thing is they didn't hear it yet. It is because of more than two decades reluctance to meet the demand of our armed forces that wee are lagging so much behind China. Most of our machinery is obsolete.

1) IA operate around 5000 MBT out which 550 are T55, 2000 T72 and these tanks have crossed their life cycle age. They cannot work at night.
2) Indian army operates something more than 200 helicopters while US army operates more than 4500. Just see the difference man.
3) IA operates 3200 artillery and last time we purchased artillery was in 1980s and that too were very small in numbers, so my guess is our other artilleries have crossed their age by more than a decade.
4) Our submarine fleet is decreasing while our neighbors fleet is increasing at a very faster rate and there is no induction possible till 2017-2018 as first Scorpene is supposed to be launched in 2015. Its because we haven't made any purchase in decades.
5) IAF fleet is also reducing while our neighbors are continuously increasing their air power.
6) IAFs transport fleet is also getting old.
7) Helicopters are getting obsolete in all the 3 forces.

I mean i can go on and on. It is the negligence of more than 2 decades that now we can't even maintain the sanctioned strength of equipments in ou armed forces and forget about increasing it. Armed forces are also responsible but in all the above cases forces are requesting for decades but with one or the other reasons their request is being denied while this does not happen in any other country, forget about US and UK.

The problem is his remarks are made in public ceremony.


Sometime back one retired navy/air force chief praised Mr. Hooda on wining election in Haryana. He was castigated in news channels in a similar fashion.

What Manekshaw did to Indira was small compared to Mr. vajpayee when he called Indira as Maa Durga.
