MEERUT: Acting on a tip-off by a man arrested here on suspicion of being an ISI agent, the special task force (STF) on Saturday arrested an Indian Army jawan who was suspected to have sent vital information to ISI operatives in Pakistan and Dubai.
The jawan, Suneet Kumar, who is posted in Babina Cantonment in Jhansi, was on leave and visiting his native Anthresa village near Palampur in Himachal Pradesh, when he was nabbed, investigative officer Prabhakar Quaintera, who was part of the team which made the arrest, said. A laptop and two mobile phones were recovered from Suneet.
The man arrested earlier, Asif Ali, had told authorities that he had given Suneet a laptop and provided the MAC (media access control) address of the laptop to an ISI operative in Karachi called Zahid.
During preliminary interrogation, Suneet revealed that he had befriended a girl on Facebook through a childhood friend, Manohar, whose father had served in the Army, Aneeth Kumar, circle officer (STF), said. The two had gotten quite close, although they hadn't met. They would even talk to each other on phone. Kumar said Suneet told interrogators that the girl would ask him vital details about his Army unit and other units at Babina Cantonment. At one time, she offered him a gift, and Kumar said he wanted a laptop, which was subsequently handed to him by Ali.
"We are trying to establish contact with Manohar for investigations," Kumar said
