Army expresses reservation over AFghanistan-Pak policy

Wednesday, 16 Sep, 2009

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army leadership has informed the US administration about its reservation over the new US policy regarding the Pak-Afghan region. President Asif Ali Zardari during his visit to the USA will also advocate the country’s stance in this connection.

The military top brass, including Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee General Tariq Majid made it clear to the US leadership during the recent visit of Chairman US Joint Chief of Staff Committee Admiral Mike Mullen, Commander of the US Central Command General David Petraeus and Commander of the Allied forces in Afghanistan General Stanely McCrystal that the same policy for both Pakistan and Afghanistan by the US would not prove successful.

Sources said that the army has informed in written to the US administration about its reservations regarding its new ****** policy.

The army leadership communicated that there was a large difference between the situation in Afghanistan and that in Pakistan and if the US tried to implement the same policy in Pakistan than it would not only yield negative results but it will also affect Pak-US relations.

COAS Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and CJCSC General Tariq Majeed have also reportedly advised President Zardari to convince the US not to see Pakistan and Afghanistan from the same perspective and adopt a separate policy for Pakistan.—Online

Pakistan should be the main focus and not Afghanistan.

i guss, yanks always learn it , hard way plz, just check thier voilent history!
the real probleum is that , thier pretendency of bieng the lonly super power on earth, they always pretend that they are right, because they are ahead in technology, & they still pretend to run world affairs for the comming 100 years in future.:cheesy:

still they think , if the things get out of thier hands , they can nuke it , like they did in 40s in japan, with emerging world thier selfish tactics , seems to be seen as a threat, itself, which they never realize.:smokin:
the world would be better if they, realize the fact that "Subko aik hee lathi say haankna nahi", & if they share , the responsiblity of running the world affairs , with different weaker but growing nations , the world will be a better place to live for them & for the nations like us.
but , thier special intersts in every region , couldnt let them to think differently!

And what is the substance of these reservations??

That's of course reasonable, but is the US "implementing" the same policy in Pakistan as it is in Afghanistan?? If yes, perhaps some better informed will help us all better understand

The details of Afg-Pakistan Strategy have not been released to the public, neither it has been epitomized, so only broad parameters are available.

The Afg-Pakistan strategy treats Afghanistan and Pakistan as the same strategic theater and it seeks a quantum leap against Talibans in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The policy talks about "more financial aid, troop deployments, societal development, and regional cooperation to help deal with the complex regional situation."

Now this is all correct an may be acceptable to some extent but then things like joint operations on Pakistan’s western frontiers, treating the two countries as if same kind of issues surrounds the two, sidelining Pakistan's interest (to include but not limited to the Strategic Depth thingy) and treating the Talibans as Pakistan's "main strategic assets" against against afghanistan/india, is not at all acceptable to our military high ups!

Nice post Xeric,

as for the concerns as Xeric already pointed them out:

1) No one clearly knows the full implication of this policy, details are being kept sketchy and its usage is shadowy nonetheless, with outlandish ideas regarding Pakistan like;

2) only broad parameters are available.

3) treats Afghanistan and Pakistan as the same strategic theater

4) seeks quantum leap against Talibans in Pakistan.

5) treating the two countries as if same kind of issues surrounds the two

6) sidelining Pakistan's interest

7) treating the Talibans as Pakistan's "main strategic assets

What we can do is highlight and discuss all these points, but treating Pakistan like Afghanistan is going to have huge implications for us, economically, socially, security vise, etc. etc.
