QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistan's army chief on Thursday criticized madrassas that have mushroomed nationwide for mostly teaching only Islamic theology, saying the country needs to "revisit" the religious school concept.

Modernizing madrassa education is a thorny issue in Pakistan, a deeply conservative Muslim nation where religious schools are often blamed for radicalization of youngsters but are the only education available to millions of poor children.

General Qamar Javed Bajwa's remarks, apparently off-the-cuff during a prepared speech, were a rare example of an army chief criticizing madrassas, which are often built adjacent to mosques and underpin Islamisation efforts by religious hardliners.

Bajwa said a madrassa education in Pakistan was inadequate because it did not prepare students for the modern world.

"I am not against madrassas, but we have lost the essence of madrassas," Bajwa told a youth conference in Quetta, the capital of the southwestern province of Baluchistan.



Bajwa said he was recently told that 2.5 million students were being taught in madrassas belonging to the Deobandi, a Sunni Muslim sub-sect that shares the beliefs of the strictly orthodox Wahhabi school of Islam on the Arabian Peninsula.

"So what will they become: will they become Maulvis (clerics) or they will become terrorists?" Bajwa asked, saying it was impossible to build enough mosques to employ the huge number of madrassa students.

"We need to look (at) and revisit the concept of madrassas...We need to give them a worldly education."

Pakistan has over 20,000 registered madrassas, though there are believed to be thousands more unregistered ones. Some are single-room schools with a handful of students studying the Koran.

Security services have kept a close eye on madrassas associated with radicalizing youths and feeding recruits to Islamist militant outfits that have killed tens of thousands of people in the South Asian country since 2000.

But only a handful of the schools have been shut down, the authorities' hand stayed by fears of a religious backlash.

Islamist hardliners hold great sway in Pakistani society, with the capital, Islamabad, paralyzed for nearly three weeks last month by a blockade staged by a newly formed ultra-religious party.

Bajwa said poor education was holding back the nation of 207 million people, and especially in madrassas.

"Most of them are just teaching theology. So what are their chances? What is their future in this country?"

The military last year proposed a plan to deradicalize religious hard-liners by "mainstreaming" some into political parties, a plan initially rejected by the civilian government but which now appears to be taking form.

Rubbish. Dars e nizami is the curriculum and has been for about 500 years without problems.

Slowly but surely the problem is being exposed.

Agreed madrassas were once schools which taught everything from Islamic studies to mathematics to science and played a significant role I triggering the Islamic golden age where science progressed extensively however the reason for that is bcz

1. Madrassas were in huge number which meant that they helped increase literacy and knowledge.
2. That due to having various scientific subjects along with Islamic studies, they increased the research culture of the area. Every student that attended or left was touched by science and in that age it meant a lot. .

In the modern age madrassas completely fell down and focused entirely on religious studies becoming no better than Sunday school. This poses a great problem bcz madrassas can be found at every corner of Pakistan. We don't have nearly as many schools and although they have played a significant role in literacy however they have failed at every other thing and in this modern world it is simply not good enough.


Kaaptan. I won't say shut them down bcz they can be the key that triggers our golden age due to their huge numbers and reach even in remote areas.

If we revisit them. Change their curriculum. Add scientific subjects. Reasoning and creativity rather than robots that only follow orders, we can change the dynamics of the country. Bring them under state fold. Provide full teachers and basically turn them into govt schools ( competent ones) and voila. You have now placed an institution of knowledge at every corner of Pakistan which will advance research culture which is declining in pakistan.

I don't have to tell you what happens when the research culture dies. What hell awaits that nation when that happens.

The above is a struggle but is a thousand times less struggle than comprehensive plans of creating new schools at every corner and then competing with madrassas and parents who send their kids over there. This will also end or greatly diminish the mullah power hold over the nation and would bring the government control and writ over the populace to whole new level.

The likes of khadim rizvi can't win an election but they can bring 5k clowns to the capital and create violence all over Pakistan bcz of these institutions. Only a few and you have your drones in a city and these madrassas are exactly that. Drone making facilities who don't know anything about Islam and when questioned, the kill you under blasphemy.

This is the responsibility of the govt and the govt has absolutely failed in this which is another great accomplishment of N in it's fight against terrorism.

Just like other ball less govts, the N govt has also taken its hands off with the reduction of terrorism not realizing that the military front was a small portion of the war on terror. The real battle was always going to be state vs the drone making machines and quite frankly the state has absolutely failed in it. Absolutely pathetic.

so put the most sensitive and important aspect of grooming of our lives under a havaldar. that grooming was done initially by the Prophet himself. this is the difference and that's why we are lagging behind in every field.

there is no grooming at all in our madrassahs, schools, universities and even in mosques. our schools, colleges and universities are selling degrees. people get degrees to earn money . they are totally devoid of any sort of grooming. same is the case with our madrassahs and every other field. everything is a business these days. education, religious education, health , justice etc.

I think having a 500 year old curriculum is kind of a problem.

Madrassas need to be carefully kept an eye on. Every single one. As we've witnessed in the past 3 or 4 years the battle with terrorism might've been ending but the one with extremism is only beginning. And unlike terrorists these extremists are Afghans or RAAA KAY AGENT, they're own very own people. Most of which are coming from these madrassas.

Strangely the school of theology are being blamed when every one knows , it is the Provinces which have not provided adequate High quality schools for masses and specially the poor class.

Theology is not a crime , it should be taught to have better understanding anyways

In most part the Theological students are merely mellow folks who mind their own business majority of time.

A right balance is indeed needed however it is 100% state responsibility to increase modern schools and also improve educational material and quality of education.

However I do find that in Pakistani Schools there is lack of focus on Hadith and other important Islamic Education. Islam was just not the 2-3 wars fought in Prophet Mohammad's time , infact the various day to day problems are deeply discussed in Hadith which serves as a good exampel to teach muslims proper mannerism to deal with Muslims and also minorities.

If mulvi's are singing , "Main Hoon Sunni Mulvi , tan tan tana tan" it shows you part of the problem.

The last time it tried something you had "Dharnas of Islam".

I think everyone's confusing the word Madrassa to mean solely an institution for Islamic studies.

Not what the origins of the word, which has roots to many ancient languages, meaning an institution of learning.

I think it is absolutely fantastic we have Theology based schools , after all we are a Islamic republic.

However , if our Govenment /Military have a constructive means to develop high standard schools

I know we are modern country know even I watch those TV channel sponsored by PEPSI where the guy is playing funky electric guitar and trying to relive the Slash generation. Look I get it , some music and relaxing time is great. Obviously Coke is always promoting healthy commercialy Hero & Heroin drinking coke after a party again fine , I know the subliminal message being conveyed there in those commercials very modern

As a child and even now I laughed sometimes as those commercials and idea of modernization as it applies to Pakistan , such a vast difference between what is in commercials and actual reality, but brings a smile to my face.

However going back to the issue of schools.
Simply blaming the poor class kids is some what perhaps not accurate

Definition of high standard schools

a) Have proper green grass grounds for playgrounds , with sports activities
b) Have Computer Labs , and have technical training courses
c) Have teachers who are high quality degree holders who pass , various quality standards courses
d) Have free food served for children etc and milk for free
e) All books and student uniform is 100% free
f) All children are taken to do fun things every 3 weeks outdoor (Zoos, Parks , Beach Trips , Museums)

Hey I am 100% up for that version of Schools in Pakistan!!!

However if that quality can't be provided and it is expected all students should remain uneducated , finger print users , then unfornately getting minimum education in Madrassa is not a bad thing

1-2 Bad apples don't mean the mass is corrupt

Now if Government/Military wishes to introduce 20,000 Schools of high calibre as defined above , hey absolutely fantastic initiative


It would take at least 18 years to transition a generation safely from Madrassas to 100% Modern schools


I think the correct approach should be , hey next budget we will setup 20,000 new schools and transition children from Madrassa to new schools and they will also still learn about Islam

I have watched few general knowledge shows (TV game shows) and when folks answer in those shows just shows how horrible the general knowlege is for various folks in country


We really have two extremes

a) One branch of schools barely covers basics in Islamic faith , horrible teachers , bad schools, most think Saudis are direct decendents of Prophet

b) Other branch covers only the Islamic topics , horrible teachers, bad schools

So either way folks are not getting ideal education, either it is too little or too much
