What's new

Arjun Mark-II will be completed by July 2011

Where it says April? News report says July'2011 and that's an estimate. Slipping timelines are common things in R&D projects.

So my expectation is, it will be out by year end and even if it came out, there is no guarantee that Indian Army won't reject it under some new excuses or revised requirements. So, lets see how much numbers IA actually orders by year end otherwise, it will be all wasted efforts by people working on this project.
Arjun mk2 will be on time because DRDO has been working on these technologies for long time and now its time for them to integrate all these techs and test them on ground in real conditions.

But there may be a demand to reduce the weight to 50 tonnes to improve mobility. This can be achieved to some extent by applying nanotechnology in reducing the thickness of armors while retaining their strength,” he said.
Well said, i think we should go for arjun mk3 as FMBT instead of going for an altogether different design for FMBT and this is what experts from Germany, Israel etc. said when they came to India last year but i don't know why IA is so against Arjun ??

I mean if they don't like mk1, smarter thing is to wait and see the mk2, and then decide for mk3, they have already filled the gap with more orders of T90 and they are going ahead with the up-gradation plan for T72. Not to mention, they haven't come up with a design for FMBT yet.

Why they are ignoring the fact that their is reason why all the countries have followed the trend of newer verrsion of the same design in MBTs. I think IA should stop acting stubborn and just ask their counterparts once again about the approach for our FMBT program instead of committing a new mistake for which DRDO will be criticized in the future instead of IA.

^^^ FMBT will take time, not anytime before 2020, Army also wants it by 2020 only. So there is huge possibility of Arjun mK III by 2016/17.

I hope so.... Also i think FMBT should be handled by someone else so that both prototypes i.e. prototype of FMBT and Arjun mk3 can compete for the main job, so that we can get the best. FMBT can be given to private sector because now private sector have good partnerships like the recent one of KMW and Ashok Leyland and then we also have Mahindra and BAE. It would be good...

Private sector is still not completely open to defence my friend. I don't think you guys should get too excited. If Arjun mk2 enters production in 2014, it'll be produced for atleast 5 years before anything else enters production. But the worst part is, the Arjun Mk1 production line will be idle for the ext 2-3 years until the mk2 enters production. Pathetic, really.

by doing regular upgrades we can test and prove techs for fmbt

okay stupid question perhaps.

do they at any point take the original version of tanks in the field and upgrade them to mark 2 version? Because- I thought i read someone post - there are no structural changes to the tank.

Thats when tanks get old, like DRDO upgraded T-72s. But these Arjun mk 2 will be new tanks with new features.

Actually most of these features of mk2 will be in fmbt.

Its not excitement, actually through this we could get some good quality techs from outside and we might even get a better product than DRDO's. Competition in this field will always result in something good.

And your point??/ Its good because by the time FMBT will be build production line will be free for FMBT but i think new line will be built when FMBT will enter production because current production capacity is too less and FMBT requirement is too much.

Thats a problem...but i think they should try to export some of these beast in those idle years.

^^^^ Outstanding video!!!! Specially Arjun and T-90S was awesome. We need LCH there, thats it. :chilli:

New Features
P Sivakumar, CVRDE Director, told The Hindu in November 2010 that Arjun-Mk-II would have a total of 93 upgrades.

Top New Features in Arjun Mk-II

Ability to fire anti-tank guided missiles through the tank’s main gun.

Extra protection for the tank’s crew through explosive reactive armor, or ERA

Thermal imaging panoramic sights that allows the Arjun’s commander to scan his surroundings even by night.

An automatic target tracking (ATT) system which will add to the accuracy when firing on a moving target.

Advanced air defence gun system for firing at attack helicopters.

Enhanced Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) with a capacity of 8.5 KW (against Mark I's 4.5 KW).
Mine Plough.

Advanced Land Navigation System (ALNS)
Digital control harness.

Improved gun barrel with an Equivalent Firing Charge (strength of the barrel to sustain firing) of 500 rounds against T 72's 250 rounds.

Indigenous engine will replace the German engine of the 58-tonne Arjun Mark-I.

phsed Upgrade
According to Sivakumar:

In phase I, 45 tanks will roll out with 56 upgrades, including the missile firing capability and the commander's panoramic sight with night vision. Phase I production of Arjun Mark-II will be completed by July 2011

In phase II, the remaining 79 tanks, with all the 93 improvements, will come off the assembly line. “By 2013-14, the first batch of around 30 tanks will go out,” Dr. Sivakumar said. Phase 2 production will be completed by June 2012.

AntiTank Missile
DRDO’s Chief Controller for Armaments and Combat Engineering, S Sundaresh, told Business Standard, in April, 2010:

“We had test-fired the Israeli LAHAT missile through the Arjun gun as far back as in 2005," said Sundaresh. “It will take us about six months to integrate the LAHAT’s designator into the Arjun’s fire control system.”

Era
The ERA will entail an additional 2 ton penalty, pushing the tanks weight up to 60 tons. However, DRDO believes the tanks 1,500 HP engine easily accommodate the extra weight.

“The ERA will protect the Arjun’s crews from enemy missiles. Initially we will fit the same Russian ERA that protects the T-90 and the T-72. But, we will also develop our own indigenous ERA.”

The HVF can deliver upto 50 tanks in a year.

Laser Warning Systems
According to unconfirmed reports Arjun Mk-II will be equipped with a Laser Warning Systems developed by Elbit of Israel.

The systems provide 360-degree coverage with accurate and timely warnings of laser and radar-guided threats that can automatically trigger a full array of countermeasures.

Elbit Systems’ Laser Warning System (E-LAWS) and Threat Detection System (TDS) detect, categorize and pinpoint laser sources such as rangefinders, designators, beam riders, infrared illuminators and trainers. In addition to laser sources, the Multi Threat Detection System (MTDS) detects, categorizes and pinpoints radar/RF sources. All of these systems allow for training within the vehicle and include built-in test.

Armor Protection System

According to unconfirmed reports Arjun Mk-II will also be fitted with the Iron Fist APS (Active Protection System) developed by srael Military Industries (IMI).

The Iron Fist APS is designed to defeat RPGs, tank rounds and guided missiles, including those fitted with tandem warheads.

It uses passive and active sensor for threat detection, situational awareness and fire control.

The Iron Fist APS can employ both an electro-optical ‘soft kill’ countermeasure and ‘hard kill’ interceptors that are launched against incoming threats.

Iron Fist doesn't use "hit to kill" against an enemy projectile in order to avoid dangerous shrapnel. Instead it uses a close proximity blast to defeat the threat, crushing the soft components of a shaped charge or deflecting and destabilizing the missile or kinetic rod in their flight.

The use of a blastalso reduces the complexity and cost of interception.

The interceptor is made of combustible envelope, fully consumed in the explosion.

Iron Fist also accurately determines the launch point of the projectile enabling rapid counterstrike, thus eliminating repeated attacks.
