Argentina — Argentina’s defense chief expressed shame Wednesday after a Navy destroyer sank at its moorings, putting on display the declining fortunes of a once-proud fleet.
The ARA Trinidad led Argentina’s 1982 sea war against Britain, but has long been mothballed and used for spare parts to sustain what’s left of Argentina’s Navy.
A Navy statement said that a pipe burst, flooding the ship below decks. Defense Minister Arturo Puricelli denied that cuts to the fleet’s maintenance budget were to blame. He said negligence or “sabotage” were possible and demanded a complete investigation.
“When the president asks me, I’ll be ashamed, frankly, to tell her that a boat sank while tied to the dock,” Puricelli told Radio 10. “There has to be a well-founded reason for this.”
Opposition congressmen blamed a decade of disinvestment in Argentina’s military, and said the country is ill-equipped to defend its seas.
“That a boat sinks in port due to a lack of maintenance reveals the deterioration and abandonment of our fleet, vital to the defense of a sovereignty that our president never loses an opportunity to proclaim to the world, but which we are very far from being able to defend,” Congressman Gustavo Ferrari said.
Ferrari presented a study last year concluding that Argentina’s army, air force, coast guard and navy were all badly underfunded.

Several Navy ships have had trouble operating: the warship Espora was stuck in South Africa last year for lengthy repairs, and breakdowns kept the destroyer Argentina from completing a mission in Brazil. The icebreaker Almirante Irizar is still in repairs after a 2007 fire.
Puricelli acknowledged the delays, but said nearly $100 million has been spent on repairs.
Meanwhile, Argentina’s 3,100-mile (4,989-kilometer) coastline is being protected by a fleet that has been reduced to three destroyers, two other warships, several patrol boats, two scientific vessels, an icebreaker and the Libertad, the tall ship used to train cadets that was detained for months in Africa last year as collateral for unpaid debts.
Congressman Julio Martinez said Wednesday that of a total of 70 navy ships, only 16 are in sailing condition, and even then only barely. He said increases in defense spending have gone to salaries, leaving little or nothing for maintenance or investment in hardware.
“It’s hugely hypocritical to talk of sabotage when for 10 years the ship has been abandoned,” Martinez told Argentina’s Todo Noticias channel.
The Trinidad was mothballed only a few years after leading the ultimately unsuccessful occupation of the Falklands, which Argentines claim as the Islas Malvinas. Martinez said he, like most Argentines, has no desire to wage another war, “but if the country lacks defenses, and the British know that, they won’t ever negotiate a peaceful resolution.”

Asian Defense: Argentine destroyer that led war against Britain sinks, a symbol of decay for once-proud navy

My condolences. I Hope that the Argentine Navy will not have an incident in this scale again.

Argentina Navy has sunk another Type-42 :yahoo:

Seriusly, the ship was completely abandoned, it was negligence, it started to sink in December and nobody did anything about it.

As for the other... well as long politicians sees their own army as a enemy, nothing will change.

BTW, this the second time ARA Santisima Trinidad sink in his own port.

Well its really a case for Embarrassment. With this kinda fleet, they shouldnt even dream on winning back Falkland Islands from Britain

We are more worried about UK attacking us at this point, or taking over the whole antartic territory on 2041, those are the real reason of why they want them.

But them again, the politicians, expecially the president and most the people sees our own military forces as a enemy, the current state of our army is the result of that.

I remember an indian navy ship also sank in it's home port about a year or so ago.

I support argentina in case of falkland islands. But ur country needs to understand, without a good armed forces, respect will be tough to earn.

I think u r talking about a naval ship, which collided with a merchant ship near Mumbai. It was already a 25 year old ship towards the end of its life. The collision was pretty bad.

Well, Typhoons test our air defenses and responce times every now them, there is none, but they still do it, now they are moving a force to the islands to "defend them if we attack it", they know perfectly well we cant even invade a park in front of one of our bases. They may very well find a excuse and attack.

they have nothing to gain and everything to lose by attacking you. The issue is not whether you are weak or strong, the issue is whether they can attack or not. They cant.
The reason for reinforcement is because their armed forces is facing unprecedented cut(which ur leaders know), so they want to preempt any argentine adventure. Its a bit like barking so that you guys know they are still there.

testing air defence is a usual thing for any country..

For a moment there I thought that somebody had sank it as an act of war, like torpedoed it or something

The point is, we are weaker than we ever were on 1982, we have maybe 9 working A-4AR with dumb bombs and AIM-9M and thats it, pilots dont even fly the mininum hours per year, our army has no stuff to start any invasion anywhere, hell they cant even protect they own bases as a lot of weapons get stolen every year, our Navy is the best we have, but it does not have money to keep things operational, none of our subs are operational, there is MAYBE 1 Meko 360 and 1 Meko 140 operational right now, and 1 P-3, not sure about if there is enoght pilots for the 5 SUE.

We cant invade anything, we cant defend ourselfs either, and they know it, they still send extra forces here... Cameron is trying to make public belive we are a threat so it can save its political career, so i doubt of his intentions.
