Are you sitting? UN congratulates Saudi Arabia on its respect for human rights
November 13, 2018 Fabrice Drapel 7 Comments Saudi Arabia , UN
This is neither a "fake news" nor a joke: last Monday, UN delegates praised the Islamist kingdom. To read.
Those who still believe that the UN is a box full of serious, responsible, enlightened and thoughtful diplomats must read the following: Saudi Arabia has received congratulations from UN delegates for its record on human rights. The news was reported by Hillel Neuer of UN Watch.
It was only last Monday that the Saudi kingdom's assessment was reviewed by a UN panel during a process called " universal periodic review " (UPR), which takes place every five years for each member state. Of the 96 delegates who spoke on behalf of their respective countries, 75 congratulated Saudi Arabia on its human rights record.
Here are some examples of the brilliant metaphorical pearls pronounced by the delegations present:
- Venezuela: "We congratulate Saudi Arabia for [allowing] the emancipation of women".
- Pakistan: "We welcome [Saudi Arabia's] efforts to empower women and promote gender equality."
- Palestine: "We believe that Saudi Arabia attaches great importance to human rights [...]".
- Jordan: "The Saudi government has made human rights one of its top priorities."
- China: "We salute Saudi Arabia for [...] its efforts in the field of economic and social development [...] as well as for its judicial reform and its fight against corruption".

PREDICTION: after China sang the praises of Saudi Arabia in today's UN Human Rights Council review of the Saudi record, tomorrow when China gets its turn to be reviewed, Saudi Arabia will take the floor to sing the praises of China's human rights record. https://www.unwatch.org/un-farce-china-lauds-saudis-saudis-laud-china-tomorrow-mutual-praise-society/ …
Remember that last June, the Islamic State was elected to the UN Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women . To make matters worse, the kingdom sits on two other UN committees created specifically for women: the Commission on the Status of Women (since April 2017) and the UN-Women Board of Directors (since April 2018). These appointments have all raised criticism, but the United Nations has remained deaf.
