I have a friend who is extremely afraid of hijras...I saw many men and women who shiver at the sight of hijras.. the other day one of my colleagues was telling that they are a big nuisance in trains in northern and western India... even in my city people are scared of them...I heard people in northern India take blessings from hijras.. is it true?

Why don't police act strict on them? Do hijras in Pakistan also create nuisance?

Hi,

Actually they are wonderful human beings---you just have to respect them and talk to them. I remember them from pre teen years----they used to come to my grand mother's house get help / alms----one of them was a Haji----.

So---here is a real story----some of it is in Punjabi ----. My older uncle is getting married---the time is in the mid 60's----pre wedding get together----party is on in the grand parents house---a couple of the Hijras come and start singing----. My grand ma gives them some money----one of the Hijras turns to my younger uncle---and says---Mian---too wi taan kuj dey----my uncle is a miser--he pulls out a chawani---25 paisa coin and wants t give it to the Hijra---when the Hijra saw that---he got furious at the paltry sum---and says----" ainhoon toon bund wich lai kay cheek maar "-----oh man----all the family was rolling on the floor laughing.

Not scared, but they do tend to make me uncomfortable. I had an encounter with one just yesterday at a traffic signal in Kolkata. I quickly gave him a 100 bucks, S/he said a few nice things/blessings and went away. :|

I have also heard that most of them are not really eunuchs, but men dressed up as women and pretending to be eunuchs just to make some money.
Its better to check before giving them money :omghaha:

. . . . . .
Hijra try to get some money from you by embarrassing or annoying you . Its not scaring thing but they just want to make you feel uncomfortable so that you give them some money and they often behave as if its their birth right to take this money from you and often start cursing loudly if you refuse to give them so some women give them money just to get rid of this nuisance

Why do you give them money?

Do they harass you into giving them money?

Not afraid of transgenders.
Whenever they've come to me, I gave them the money they asked for.
Not so long back it used to be a custom to call the transgenders to celebrate a baby's birth in north indian homes.

Do they harass you into giving them money?
Yes, I've seen them do that to men.

Some do, some don't, more like nagging than harassing. I gave the money cause I wanted to get rid of him. They bother young guys the most.

Funny story (around 17-18 years back) I was 10 years old, I was travelling by train in India with my mum. This snake charmer (so stereotypical !) came on board with a bag full of snakes and was showing his tricks. My mom is absolutely petrified of snakes, so was I, and that asshole noticed it, and he would literally shove the snake in our face, my mum threw couple of hundred rupee notes in his face and ask him to piss off! 200 bucks back then is like Rs 2000 in today's term, not a small amount.

I don't support that at all. It seems like bad manners.
