Without a doubt, being a Vegetarian is better than being a Non-Vegeterian. Not just because of animal cruelty (which is a big factor - there are some horrifying videos out there, I don't think I should post them..) but also for your own health. Currently, I consume meat but one day, I hope to become vegetarian. :agree:

As more and more studies are coming up about the detrimental aspects of non vegetarian food.The following points list the demerits as well as ways you can circumvent the harmful effects.

1. Non Vegetarian foods are fibreless: The roughage portion is missing in non vegetarian diets, therefore one should make a conscious effort to eat foods high in roughage. The foods high in roughage (insoluble fiber) are wheat bran, whole cereals like brown rice. Oat fiber is particularly beneficial for cardiac cholesterol related disorders. Oats have soluble fiber which dissolves in the body fluids and helps the body to decrease the cholesterol buildup.

2. Non Vegetarian foods are high in cholesterol: Since non vegetarian foods contain cholesterol, it is important to avoid other foods which can have additive affect on the cholesterol, like dairy products, particularly cheese. Besides these, one must avoid foods which have trans-fatty acids.

3. Non Vegetarian foods which are processed and preserved may contain high amounts of chemicals. Therefore, it is important to limit the quantity of non vegetarian food products which may contain preservatives.

4. Non Vegetarian foods are devoid of many vitamins. To keep up a healthy level of Vitamin B complex and Vitamin C, it is important to eat fruits and vegetables in adequate quantities to prevent any deficiency from coming up. Fruits should be eaten in their natural state and drinking packed juices is not the solution. Similar is the case with eating vegetables destroyed by deep frying beyond recognition.

5. Non vegetarians need strong digestive enzymes to be able to digest proteins. Hence, it is important to include sources of natural digestive enzymes in the diet to help the body keep its digestive capability high. Foods rich in enzymes are raw papaya (can be eaten as a salad) - rich in enzyme papain; pineapple - rich in the enzyme bromelene, and basic salads which are rich in natural enzymes.

6. Many authorities claim that people should be cautious while consuming fish found near industrial zones as they may be toxic.

7. Red meat should be consumed sparingly if you have increased incidence of hypertension and heart problems. Once a week, detox by eating fruits, sprouts, vegetable juices, salads and non-roasted nuts.


I do consume non veg including red meat but not more than 4-5 times a month.One should restrict himself to non veg food to a maximum of twice a week.

I don't indulge in too many veg vs non-veg discussions. But frankly I need to clarify certain points regarding content.
Firstly, it does not matter how high the content of Vitamins, protiens or carbohydrate is in a food. What matters is whether it is bio-available. Simply put, can the human body easily access it.
Omega fats, proteins and Vitamins are negligibly bio-available from vegeterian sources, even those having extremely high content of these nutrients. Soya bean is an exception to the rule. Indian food tends to over compensate by introduction of various cooking techniques and animal sources from milk products(ghee, butter) etc.
Meat products do lead to problems of BP and cholestrol. But vegeterian diet isn't entirely healthy. A pure Indian vegeterian diet is more carbohydrate concentrated as compared to the rest giving us typical lifestyle disorders such as diabetes, thyroid problems and obesity by addition of visceral fat.

Frankly irrespective of religion, the physical regimen should direct the dietary habits and irrespective of the diet regimen, lifestyle would eventually influence the actual health implications.

BTW..no I am not a vegeterian (Frankly a lot of veg food just passes through my digestive system without assimilation.Don't ask for further details. Just a nasty revelation to me during my college days in the DMLT lab of Wockhardt).

This animal cruelty thingy is just useless- an excuse-

science have proved Plants are living and breathing organisms-

Ironically- earlier in the day- i was just talking to my Hyderabadi friend about south indian food- he said its a conservative tradition- not specific to special occasions-

Doubt it. Maybe in remote Villages but even then it's just not feasible for someone to go out looking for banana leaves everyday.
 
i find veg food easy on the stomach,i eat non veg when i am in a cold place with stark winters.Then i like mutton curries with roti and chai.In a hot place,vegg+milk+fish is the way to go.

Pure vegg food need not be carb rich.u can eat small portions and eat rawer food,fruits,milks etc.

well sir i dont know the names but they have many types of them which are complinented by ghee ,gunpowder and 4 types of aachaars i just love them too bad they dont serve beer withit..!man you have made me so hungry ...darn.

Gun powder, oh u mean "Kandi Podi" or for english "spiced powder" ?? man u gave me a fright there u know. I was thinking when did i eat gun powder and live through, You are right it is very very tasty when eaten with a drizzle of Ghee. And u are damn right buddy if only they serve beer it would be wonderful. You know thats why i cook food at my room and have a beer with it my style :partay:

most cities in India have some truly great restaurants which take food to a whole new level . for instance Bangalore - queens on church street . or barbecue nation at domlur.
pune - Georges at east street or a small thali joint opp west end theater. or just go to ABC food farms :smitten:
mumbai - swalt water , or mahesh lunch home .
karad -hotel sangam best mutton maratha durbar.
nagpur - sanja chulla or moti mahel or in lohapul there is a saouji restaurant ......:smitten:
aurangabad you get the best thatil in india at preet bhoj .
or Delhi where the street food of paratha walli gali is legendary . another great is moti mahel where some say butter chicken was invented. or just go to karims.
Goa has to be suza lobo or infataria at calangute , corinas at panjim or martins corner at colva.
Hyderabad . paradise or bawarchi fight for the prime spot of biryani . or in the month of ramzan go to a small joint called shann in hafiespeth for the best haleem .
i want to go on :)
