I saw those man, but calling the Sri Lankan nation and army as a war criminal for fighting to get rid of terror and destruction which was a cancer on their nation is in a sense siding with the tiger terrorists. These cases of war crimes, and some of them are indeed war crimes, I am not going to defend the people perpetrating such nonsense either, they should be tried and sentenced.

I will have to agree just based on what I have seen with my own eyes and what you and your uncle have also witnessed. We can't let their rotten core paint their whole nationality in a negative manner but they as a community are doing nothing, have done nothing, and will do nothing to curtail this serious crime and gang issue.

yes, but i also dont agree its a "community problem"

in fact the whole concept seems a bit silly to me, common normal behaviour does not need to be dictated by some mythical community....

But for sure the first people to intercede and help steer the youth and bad apples are the family members and friends of these people, peers, leaders, etc. and so on. That's a community.

It would end up costing Canadian taxpayers more than $300,000 a month in welfare payments for these Tamil "refugees" :

Welfare costs to grow for Tamils

TORONTO - It would end up costing taxpayers more than $300,000 a month in welfare payments if all 492 Tamil migrants who landed in British Columbia last week settled in Ontario.

And Toronto officials say there's a network of shelters to house those who come to the city.

"We have shelters across the city that can be used for emergency housing," said Councillor Janet Davis, chairman of Toronto's community development and recreation committee. "We have a mature and comprehensive range of services that will be available."

She said the city accepts about 50,000 newcomers yearly and some of the Tamils may end up staying with members of their community.

"We have a system in place to accommodate newcomers," Davis added. "We are working to help refugees and immigrants obtain housing, employment and training."

In Ontario, welfare payments start at $585 a month -- the amount paid to a single person with no kids. The stipend increases, based on the number of people in a family.

In addition to welfare, Tamil refugee claimants will be able to apply for federal benefits that include a Universal Child Care Benefit of $100 a month for each child under the age of six, according to the federal government.

They are also eligible for a federal Child Tax Benefit and the National Child Benefit Supplement, so a couple with one child can get $327.66 per month, on top of $1,058 they receive under Ontario's welfare system.

A Toronto immigration lawyer's estimate said the claimants can receive welfare for up to 18 months until their cases are heard.

It will also cost about $22 million for Ontario Legal Aid Plan lawyers to help the migrants with their cases.

About 90% of Tamils are accepted as refugees by an Immigration and Refugee Board.

IRB spokesman Melissa Anderson said 100 migrants were to appear before an adjudicator in B.C. on Wednesday.

None of the claimants have been released, but children and women are expected to be freed first, Anderson said.

Canadian Tamil Congress spokesman Manjula Selvarajah said a number of Toronto families have opened their homes to the migrants.

"We are very thankful," Selvarajah said. "A number of them (refugee claimants) will be staying at peoples' homes when they arrive here."

I am sure more ships loaded with Tamils will go to Canada.

Looks like Canadians don't want Tamils in their country :

Most Canadians say send Tamils home
Poll: Most say send Tamils home - Canada - Canoe.ca

Send them home and use the navy if necessary.

That's the message from Canadians in a new poll on the Tamil boat people.

By a margin of five to one, Canadians say the government should reject the almost 500 would-be refugees from Sri Lanka who arrived last week.

The Leger Marketing poll of 1,500 people, released exclusively to QMI Agency, was conducted Aug. 2-4 as the MV Sun Sea travelled toward the British Columbia coast.

Asked which statement best described their opinion on what should be done with the ship, which may include members of the banned Tamil Tiger terrorist group, 60% agreed with the statement: "They should be turned away -- the boat should be escorted back to Sri Lanka by the Canadian Navy."

Just 17% agreed with this statement: "They should be accepted into Canada as political refugees."

A significant number, 20%, said they did not know which answer to choose, while 4% did not answer.

Alberta ranked highest with 74% of respondents saying send back the boat and just 11% saying let them stay, while Quebec was the second highest with 64% opting to send back the boat and 15% saying the passengers should stay.

"That's a very high number (saying send back the boat)," said Leger pollster David Scholz.

He said it's likely high for a number of factors, including concerns about who arrived, such as possible terrorists, and whether other boats will follow.

"There is that worry that this is potentially people coming in, not just jumping the (refugee) queue, but coming in and falsely representing where they are from," said Scholz.

"We don't often hear about other refugee claims that are done on an individual or family basis, but when we see lots of them at the same time, we tend to get a little nervous."

Martin Collacott, Canada's highest-ranking diplomat in Sri Lanka when the civil war launched by the Tamil Tigers started in the early 1980s, said we can't just turn back the boat.

"We need to follow the process that takes the ones that are legitimate refugees and return the others," said Collacott.

How many are legitimate refugees is up for debate, said Collacott.

He noted that the MV Sun Sea didn't come directly from Sri Lanka, but from Thailand, where passengers were safe from any possible persecution from the Sri Lankan government.

As for what he takes away from the fact the majority of Canadians don't want the government to let the would-be refugees stay, Collacott pointed to a battered immigration system.

"I think it shos Canadians feel they are being taken advantage of," said Collacott.

The Canadian Tamil Congress believes that the poll results are a reflection of feelings toward the immigration system, not Tamils themselves.

"I think there is a growing frustration," said spokeswoman Manjula Selvarajah.

Still, Selvarajah put some of the blame on government rhetoric that has warned about possible criminal or terrorist connections on the boat.

"People may be reacting to certain words such as queue-jumpers and human smugglers," said Selvarajah. "If people understood the immigration and refugee system and the process in place, they may have a bit more faith in the system."

Pollster Scholz told QMI Agency that from the survey results, it's impossible to conclude whether race or ethnicity are factors in the negative reaction to the boat's arrival.

The poll of 1,500 adult Canadians was taken online between Aug. 2-4. A probability sample of the same size would yield a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

If these Tamil refugees were facing death or starvation then they could have escaped from Sri Lanka to Tamil Nadu which is just across the Palk strait. But they some how found $50 thousand each to charter a ship to travel half way across the world to Canada. These are by definition not refugees fleeing for their lives from mass murder but they are economical migrants sent by a conspiracy of terrorist Tamil Tigers. They were financed by front organizations of terrorist Tamil Tigers since they will now repay the Tigers with donations.
