Ahmedabad: Narendra Modi's party may not be sure of whether to pick him as its prime ministerial candidate, but the Gujarat Chief Minister is depositing a series of endorsements for their consideration. He was re-elected in December for his fourth consecutive term as chief minister; the European Union confirmed last week that it has ended the boycott that began after the Gujarat riots of 2002; and today, the BJP swept local elections held on Sunday, winning 47 of 75 municipal corporations across the state.

Headlining today's victory is the Salaya municipality in the Jamnagar district of Saurashtra, where 90 per cent of the population is Muslim. For the 27 seats at stake, the BJP put up 24 Muslim candidates, who were all successful. The Congress, which has won the town elections for decades, did not win a single seat.

In the state elections in December, Mr Modi had not fielded a single Muslim candidate, allowing the Congress to question his secularism. The BJP had countered that candidates were picked on the basis of whether they were likely to deliver constituencies.

In recent speeches, Mr Modi has attributed his popularity to what he calls "P2G2" -pro-people good governance. Today's results prove that theory, his party said. "It's a reply to those who have been targeting the chief minister. It's not about religion or caste, it's about good governance. The people of Salaya have voted for good governance,'' commented BJP spokesman Jagdish Bhavsar.

The area has seen huge investment for a new power project and the modernization and expansion of its port in partnership with the Essar group.

Haven't you read his speeches ? In SRCC he didn't focus on Vote Bank Politics. Just Development whereas Congress is bringing Godhara.

Congratulations to the CM and hopefully he is able to implement the reform that he has dictated in this platform, though I genuinely hope he goes with development path and it may redeem his public image after the past debacles, from an international perspective its a mix bag for sure but considering the countries's circumstance, I have changed my stance largely due to more deaths occuring from diseases and other calamities then riots in inde, which alot of people solely tend to focus on, when judging him. However he should still keep Human rights in the back of his mind to prevent any further debacles from appearing because the extreme groups and anarchist are always just dieing for that next opportunity for communal tensions, need examples look parti-quebecois aka FLQ saga. I also like the fact that he fielded some minority candidates to appease the minority, which is important to further integration, I am sure in future with close integration peoples background will matter less and less though at this point his appeasement tactic is smart and well calculated. Again I am not an expert , this is just my view as an outsider and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Don't forget the big one about how they are not true muslims.

As for Modi, he should just stick to the development programs and the great work he is doing, if people in our country are wise enough to see the progress he has made in Gujarat then I am sure he can become the next PM.
