Another Indian Army Soldier Commits Suicide
By Fayaz Wani
Srinagar, Sept 16: Failing to cope with the stress and strain, an Indian army soldier committed suicide while a para-military soldier shot himself and was critically injured, in Kashmir.
Reports said that an Indian army soldier (a signal man) identified as Brajesh Kohar was deployed inside the camp near Birpur, Bari Brahmana in Jammu province. While on duty the soldier fired a bullet from his service rifle towards himself. The bullet hit his forehead and the soldier died on the spot.
Police have registered a case and started investigations to ascertain the reason behind the soldier taking such an extreme step.
It has been learned that the soldier was unmarried and rejoined back on September 8 after availing leave. He hailed from the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
An Indian army spokesman confirmed the incident. He said that a court of inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the reasons behind it.
In a related incident, an Indian para-military soldier was critically injured after he shot at himself with his service weapon in the border district of Kupwara.
The Indian paramilitary soldier identified as Sepoy Shalinder (Belt No. 970059604 of 67 Bn BSF) was injured when he shot himself with his service weapon inside the camp at Karnah in Kupwara. "The injured soldier was removed to Indian army's base hospital in the summer capital, Srinagar, where he is undergoing treatment".
Police have registered a case and started investigations.
More than three dozen Indian army and para-military soldiers have committed suicide in restive Kashmir during the past eight months. Some Indian army officers also committed suicide.
Experts say that long absence from the family with danger lurking everywhere as they go out on patrol and counter-insurgency operations puts enormous strains on the soldiers, pushing some of them to commit suicide. Soldiers are now allowed to talk with their family members on the phone regularly. However, these measures have not had much positive impact as the soldiers deployed in violence hit Kashmir continue to commit suicide.
