Another honour killing: Man kills daughter
Bhaskar Mukherjee, TNN Jun 13, 2011, 08.09am IST
HISARINDIA)
A 17-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her father and brothers, who suspected her character, in Umra village of Hansi sub-division of Hisar district on Saturday night, adding one more to the count of 'honour' killings in Haryana.
Youngest of three siblings borne to Rameshwar Singh, a farmer, Ritu had just passed the class X examinations and had left the studies. Her parents had forced her to discontinue further education, police said.
Rameshwar Singh, sons Sunil alias Fauji and Rajesh and their uncle Jaidev Singh, later quietly cremated Ritu at the cremation ground near the village late Saturday night.
The incident became known when Ajit Singh, next-door neighbour of Rameshwar Singh, informed police control room (PCR) after hearing screams of the victim girl, who was mercilessly thrashed by the four in the
open courtyard of their house.
"I was about to sleep in the open terrace of my house, when I heard Ritu's screams. All four of them were mercilessly beating her with sticks and other things. The family members, specially women, were very much in the house when the incident took place,'' Ajit Singh told policemen.
Sources said that other members of Rameshwar's family remained mute spectators to the incident which went on for about one hour. Acting on the statement of Ajit Singh, police have booked Rameshwar, Sunil,
Rajesh and Jaidev in a case registered under 302 (murder), 201 (destroying the
evidence) and 34 (crime committed by more than one person) at Sadar police station of Hansi
sub-division.
Police were also in the process of roping in the caretaker of cremation ground to ascertain that the body cremated by Rameshwar and his family members was that of Ritu. "Investigations are on
and it is too early to comment. We have recorded the supplementary statement of the complainant,
the only eye witness on record.
We are also trying to ascertain whether she was having affair with somebody. Some villagemen, supporting Rameshwar, also came to the police station,'' inspector Kailash Sharma said.
