MARINETTE, WISCONSIN (BNS):
Lockheed Martin has launched the seventh Littoral Combat Ship (LCS 7) for the US Navy in the Menominee River at the Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard on October 18.

The new warship, christened Detroit, will continue to undergo outfitting and testing before delivery to the Navy in 2015.

The US Navy awarded the contract to construct the Detroit in March 2011. The ship is one of five LCS currently under construction at Marinette Marine.

LCS 7 is the fourth ship of the Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ships and the seventh in the class.

The LCS, being developed in two variants, has been envisioned as a versatile, networked, agile, surface combatant vessel capable of defeating anti-access and asymmetric threats in the littorals.

While Austal USA is building the Independence-class aluminum trimaran LCSs, Lockheed Martin is developing the Freedom-class semiplaning monohull ships.

The US Navy so far has received four of the warships -- USS Freedom (LCS 1) and USS Fort Worth (LCS 3) from Lockheed, and USS Independence (LCS 2) and USS Coronado (LCS 4) from Austal.

The Navy had earlier intended to procure a total of 52 such ships, but budgetary curtailment has set the limit for procuring 32 LCSs even as Pentagon plans to reevaluate the entire programme before the fiscal year 2016 budget submission.

. . . . .
this is the standard.

pics anymore ? these are being built to counter the chinese naval armada AND the russian future ships.

Apart from aviation, our Russky frienz are playing catch up. from the day electronics took over. electronics won the cold war.

I really don't understand why is it that russia never produced tech giants.

Because a closed minded, government controlled science and technology cannot work to it's full potential. Electronics is the 21st century game changer, and as such required immense research and development expenditures. Russia simply does not have the base to do that at the same level as USA/Europe, where this field has been recognized as the very aptly named 'STEM' field.

Ok will give some facts then

Jesus, the U.S spends more than the next top 8 countries combined? :o:

wow...surprised to see china despite its economy being 60% that of the U.S, yet the U.S spends almost 5 times what they do. what im even more surprised to see is that the house of Saud spends more than India,U.K ,France and japan who all have a afar bigger GDP than them :o:
Interesting graph. thanks for the info :-)

the U.S is truly a military hyperpower

you are absolutely correct about your last statement. me myself im surprised Russia lags so much behind in electronics and has never produce any tech giant per say. its indeed very puzzling

PS. That does not even include America's 'Black Budget'. So , its more than $640 Billion, unofficially, of course.

;)

Some generic pictures of the Freedom Class LCS;

If the Navy is going to build more LCSs than the Freedom and not the Independence is the best way forward.

Salute to the United States Navy !
