WASHINGTON — A Virginia man was arrested Wednesday and charged with trying to help people he believed were al-Qaida operatives planning to bomb subway stations around the nation's capital, the FBI said.

The FBI said the public was never in danger because its agents were aware of the man's activities before the alleged planning took place and monitored him throughout.

Farooque Ahmed, 34, a naturalized citizen born in Pakistan, had been indicted under seal Tuesday in Alexandria, Va., and the indictment was released Wednesday. He was charged with attempting to provide material support to a designated terrorist organization, collecting information to assist in planning a terrorist attack on a transit facility, and attempting to provide material support to carry out multiple bombings to cause mass casualties at Washington-area metro stations. Ahmed lives in Ashburn, Va., outside Washington.

Federal investigators said that, starting in April, Ahmed met several times with people he believed were al-Qaida operatives. During one of those meetings, investigators said, he agreed to watch and photograph a hotel in Washington and a metro station in Arlington, Va. He also was accused of participating in surveillance, recording video of a subway station in Arlington on four different occasions, and agreeing to get security information about two stations.

Investigators said in a Sept. 28 meeting he gave diagrams of Arlington metro stations to a person he thought was part of al-Qaida and gave suggestions about where to put explosives on trains to kill the most people in simultaneous attacks planned for 2011.

At the White House, press secretary Robert Gibbs said President Barack Obama was aware of the investigation before Ahmed was arrested. Gibbs also offered assurances that the public was never in danger.

In a statement, David Kris, assistant attorney general for national security, said the case "demonstrates how the government can neutralize such threats before they come to fruition."

"Farooque Ahmed is accused of plotting with individuals he believed were terrorists to bomb our transit system, but a coordinated law enforcement and intelligence effort was able to thwart his plans," Kris said.

Ahmed faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted.

Something for you to think about...as Pakistani origin is not the majority constituent of the Muslim population in the US.

Of course....as we all know, Farooq Ahmed is actually a Hindu from India named Fanish Amar. The news story is printed by the Zionist media with inputs from the CIA and RAW to tarnish Pakistan's name...:p:P

None of the significant media houses even named Pakistan in their headlines. It was mentioned in passing in one of the many paragraphs. If that was really their intention, it is not really difficult to malign your country's name, even you know that. And they can't help it if he has a Muslim name. He hasn't been called an "Islamic" extremist or anything. So all this propaganda and conspiracy exists only in imagination.

Is that a verdict, or did you want to say innocent-till-proven-guilty?

Suspect in D.C. Metro bomb plot sought to fight U.S. troops overseas, records say

The man charged in an alleged plot to blow up Metrorail stations in Northern Virginia came to the FBI's attention because he was asking people about ways to fight American troops in Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to court records unsealed Thursday.

Farooque Ahmed, 34, of Loudoun County told undercover FBI operatives who he thought were al-Qaeda terrorists that he was ready to martyr himself in battle, the records say. He had trained himself in martial arts, use of firearms, and knife and gun tactics, according to the documents.

He offered to teach those skills to others and purchase additional firearms for jihad, the papers say.

Ahmed is charged with conspiring to support al-Qaeda in a plot to bomb Metro stations in Arlington. The plot was hatched by authorities, unknown to Ahmed.

The 12-page sworn affidavit in support of a warrant to search Ahmed's Ashburn home and bank accounts suggests that Ahmed was a major part of the plot, providing surveillance and reconnaissance and offering his opinion on how to generate the most casualties.

The affidavit, signed by FBI Special Agent Charles A. Dayoub, details a grim 10-month courtship that began in January, just two months after Army Maj. Nidal Hasan went on a shooting rampage that killed 13 soldiers and contractors at the Army base at Fort Hood, Tex., and weeks after Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab sought to blow up an airliner over Detroit .

"AHMED stated that he wanted to kill as many military personnel as possible," Dayoub wrote. He "stated that between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. would be the best time to stage an attack to cause the highest number of casualties."

Ahmed proposed an additional Metro station target, suggested locations to place bombs and even recommended that putting explosives in rolling suitcases instead of backpacks would be more effective, Dayoub wrote.

The papers detail clandestine meetings in hotel rooms near Dulles International Airport, at which Ahmed handed over thumb drives with surveillance video.

Dayoub wrote that Ahmed might have been planning to complete the Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia and then "conduct jihad" overseas. Dayoub said the FBI believes that Ahmed had bought guns for that purpose.

If this is the way the FBI tracks people over the internet, people need to be careful with what they post online including this forum; especially if they live in the US. They might not mean any harm, but it is better to be careful than have your future jeopardized.
