Another Blow to "Make In India" Govt nixes Rs 32,000 crore minesweepers project

The list of cancelled projects is huge

1) MMRCA with France
2) Javelin with US
3) Spike with Israel
4) S-70B with US
5) Minesweepers with South Korea
6) FGFA with Russia
7) S-400 with Russia
8) Super Sukhio with Russia
......
the list goes on and on and on

Why GoI would have even announced so many ambitious arm procurement programs just to cancel them later? It makes India look sloppy and untrustworthy.

Its called kicking the can down the lane. The politicians know they just need to manage the public until the next election.

They dont know why they've been canceled. With the government change, Modi's government have cancelled several programs and gone with Indian programs, or re-doing tender to add in more private sector players, and foreign OEM partners. Some of things listed havent even been canceled.

It would have been great news for Indian military industries if they were cancelled for the sake of "Make in India". It doesn't look like the case in most of these cancelled programs, for example, Spike deal, the purchasing agreement was announced in the middle of 2017, and cancelled at the end of same year. Too much goofing around?

No major "Make in India" defence project has actually kicked off in the last three to four years due to lack of requisite political push and follow-through, bureaucratic bottlenecks and longwinded procedures, commercial and technical squabbles, as was reported by TOI in October last year.

Well, there are. We are going to see the first major private sector armored manufacturing plant under L&T to produce K9 thunders. We are going to see Mahindra raise it's M777 artillery assembly line, testing range with BAE. Punj Llyod raised the first private sector small arms assembly plant to produce Israeli small arms. In a short matter of time, considering all these areas were souly owned by gov entities, even the testing of such equipment. We're seeing MII gain pace, actually. Aero, defence is looking good - helicopters, planes, small arms, ICV, tanks, artillery, etc. will be produced by big private sector players.

I actually DONT agree with this one. Even Bharat Forge raised a assembly line for this program to produce much of the spike in India. That's what they get for being proactive, right?

It was cancelled to support a local model.

Is this program in advanced stage? MoD has been talking to the wrong party for all these years?

Slowly we were moving towards a definite path. Recent developments of small arms is quite impressive.. Be it different types of agtm, pgm, missiles and electronic warfare.

No, it's not. Design frozen, some sort of trials were held, but not the full blown system. It's on its way to full trials, but this is a long proces. For whatever reason, they thought program would be manageable. Bharat Forge invested a lot in the spike deall, we'll see what that plant will be used for now.

S-400 missiles are getting to sold to militaries worldwide. "Make in India" does not look good to me.

Like using a Spike Assembly line to manufacture Tejas MK2
The Spike deal has been cancelled as GoI wants to induct an indigenous ATGM developed by DRDO and the Bharat Forge can be given the production contract which would be a better option rather than giving it to those DPSU morons

1) MMRCA with France
It was the Congress govt who's been haggling over the price with France as they didn't have the money. BJP knew this right after they came into power and cancelled the deal right away

2) Javelin with US
3) Spike with Israel
A deal for Javelin with the US has never been signed as IA selected Spike over Javelin during trials

6) FGFA with Russia
7) S-400 with Russia
It was IAF who wasn't interested to push the FGFA as they weren't satisfied the stealth capabilities cuz they wanted it to be on par with the F-35 and also Russia's reluctance for ToT has killed the deal pretty much while S-400 has never been cancelled and MoD is very keen to procure the S-400 which is the only potent deterrent available for sale to India and it is also being procured by major countries including China.

Yeah. Spike deal has been cancelled in favor of a DRDo's project which is still on paper. How dumb can one be.

Modi took more than a year to cancel the MMRCA deal. He did not cancel it immediately.

Javelin was cancelled in favor of Spike and now Spike has been cancelled in favor of a DRDO's project which is still on paper.

Yes. IAF is not interested in PAK-FA while F-35 is not available for sale. India wants to procure S-400s but Russia would not sell unless PAK-FA is procured. It shows the total lack of thinking and planning.

.
There must have been some alternative otherwise GOI will not cancel deal.

So you're saying spend billions of foreign exchange on a weapons systems to be procured from a foreign country and spend few more billions on indigenous product. How dumb can that be. If a foreign weapons systems is procured, indigenous projects would be eventually killed or delayed indefinitely

Modi took more than a year to cancel the MMRCA deal. He did not cancel it immediately.
He came to power on 26th May, 2014 and the new deal was signed on April, 2015 which is less than an year. Moreover, he would have a lot more priorities over the MMRCA as he is the PM and not the DM. It is important for him to implement his schemes, election agendas and update existing policies. The time he took to cancel MMRCA and sign the new deal was pretty impressive as Congress has been haggling over it for a decade

Can you show me a source that Russia linked S-400 with the PAK-FA? IAF never expressed it's interest in F-35 but they wanted FGFA's stealth capabilities to be on par with F-35. Moreover, Russia isn't allowing IAF pilots to fly the prototypes and aren't willing to offer ToT or joint development but they wanted IAF to contribute 50% of the development cost which IAF is reluctant about
