Srinagar, May 4: After topping the state-level Combined Services Examination in 2010, Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar has achieved another feat by cracking the All India Civil Services Examination.

Ovessa Iqbal of Leh was the first Muslim girl from the state to qualify the prestigious examination last year and has already joined the Indian Foreign Services (IFS).

Sehrish figures at 118th ranking in All India Civil Services Examination,
the results for which were declared by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Friday.

Daughter of a former bureaucrat-turned politician Syed Asgar Ali, 25-year old Sehrish, credits his family particularly her father for the marvelous achievement. Sehrish’s mother Irshada Begum, is a housewife and the family originally belongs to Kishtwar town in erstwhile district Doda.

“I owe everything to my family for this feat. My success wouldn’t have been possible without their support and prayers,” Sehrish told Greater Kashmir over phone.

The medico who did her schooling from Presentation Convent School Jammu is not new to success.

She first cracked Kashmir Administrative Services Examination -2009, when she was not even eligible to appear for it.

“I appeared in state level civil service examination in 2009, but my result was withheld as I did not fulfill eligibility criteria of qualification. That time I had not completed my graduation in medicine at that time,” she said.

Next year, she again appeared in CSE and topped the list.

But she was not content with her success and set her foot on cracking All India Civil Services Examination.

“After topping CSE my dream was to serve people from a higher platform. My hard work and proper planning helped me a lot to realize this dream,” she said.

Serish’s message to her fellow womenfolk of the state is to work hard to realize their dreams.
“Nothing is impossible. Work hard, success will touch your feet. You just need proper guidance and planning to crack the civil services examination,” she said and added that more girls should go for such examinations instead of hankering after careers in medicine and teaching.
Pertinently, Fareeda Abdullah was first Muslim woman from JK to qualify All India civil services, but she didn’t join it. Her husband Arif S Khan who died in 2010 was India’s ambassador to Italy.

IAS is a popular career option in Kashmir

The success of Shah Faisal, who topped the civil services examination in 2010, came as a huge boost for Kashmiri youth. :yahoo:

Ten students from Jammu and Kashmir have qualified for the IAS examinations this year. In 2010, Shah Faisal of Kashmir had topped the civil services examination. His success has proved to be a huge boost for the youngsters of the Valley. Thousands of students are undergoing training in different educational academies in and outside the state, proving that civil services are becoming a primary career choice for the Kashmiri youth.

"Yes we can do it," said Syed Sehrish Asgar, who became the first Kashmiri Muslim girl to qualify for the IAS.
She came 118 on a list of 910 candidates. In 2011, Oversa Iqbal of Leh qualified for the examination and is presently in the Indian Foreign Service. Sehrish said over telephone that a change of attitude among J&K students was the main reason why they were qualifying for this examination. Asgar had topped the Kashmir Administrative Services (KAS) examination last year.

Muhammad Ajaz from the border village of Mehandhar Poonch has also qualified for IAS this year.
His father Chaudhary Ghulam Nabi said that it was the happiest day for his family and for the entire tribe in Poonch. He said that an increasing number of Gujjar students would now prepare for the IAS as his son had shown them the way.

Syed Abid from Barzulla on the outskirts of Srinagar was not available as he was in Hyderabad. His mother Jahan Ara Naqeshbandi said that her son could crack the examination because his parents had told him that conflict was no excuse for anyone to prove one in an examination. Ara, a retired teacher, said that she had instilled a sense of discipline in her son and taught him to be positive.

Good. There's a gradual change taking place in the remotest parts of the state. That's what we want to see.

IAS is a colonial curse . it prevents decentralization of power to local bodies.

And why this celebration over clearing an exam. It happens only in India.

Good news.

IAS is a colonial curse . it prevents decentralization of power to local bodies.

And why this celebration over clearing an exam. It happens only in India.

Because it symbolic to something.

Whats your solution then?

Because it's one of the toughest exams in the world and it gives you enormous power to change the world around you.

Not exactly. You can only do as commanded by the politicians.

Whats point of creating the toughest exam in the world if people qualified are going to be wasted on the job ??

Civil servants performance have not been good if track record of development in the country is anything to go by .

Civil servants becomes shadows of the govt minister without trace of individuality or intialitve.

It would have been much more worth while if political leaders clear UPSC before standing in the elections.

It should be deglamorize by the removing the power associated with IAS and giving it to the elected local bodies.

We should have civilian officers corp recruited at the undergrad level like the NDA for the military ,not medicos or engineers sneaking for basically managerial job profile of IAS.

Why a waste a medico in IAS when we have so few medicos with respect to over all population ??

Agreed. Sometimes i also feel why we need IAS officers to run 'soap factories'.

As for the bolded part how would you then explain professionals especially engineers getting MBAs (even from IITs & NITs)and ending up as some financial analysts in some banking firms.
