THE SRI LANKAN government has slammed a group of radical Buddhist monks who attacked Rohingya refugees on the island as “animals”, pledging action against police who failed to protect them.

Rajitha Senaratne, a cabinet spokesman, said the government condemned yesterday’s storming of a UN safe house where 31 Rohingya refugees, including 16 children and seven women, had been given shelter.

“As a Buddhist I am ashamed at what happened,” Senaratne told reporters.

“Mothers carrying very young children were forced out of their safe house which was attacked by a mob led by a handful of monks,” he said.

The mob broke down the gates of the multi-storied building near the capital Colombo, smashing windows and furniture as frightened refugees huddled together upstairs.

There were no reports of casualties among the refugees, who were later taken to another location, but two police officers were wounded and admitted to hospital.

Senaratne said police had been ordered to take disciplinary action against officers found to have failed to control the mob.

“This is not what the Buddha taught. We have to show compassion to these refugees. These monks who carried out the attacks are actually not monks, but animals,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s extremist Buddhist monks have close links with their ultra-nationalist counterparts in Myanmar. Both have been accused of orchestrating violence against minority Muslims in the two countries.

One of the monks who stormed the building posted a video on Facebook filmed by his radical group Sinhale Jathika Balamuluwa (Sinhalese National Force) as he urged others to join him and smash the premises.

“These are Rohingya terrorists who killed Buddhist monks in Myanmar,” the monk said in his live commentary, pointing to Rohingya mothers with small children in their arms.

The 31 Rohingya refugees were rescued by the Sri Lankan navy five months ago after they were found drifting in a boat off the island’s northern coast.

They had been living in India for several years before leaving a refugee camp in Tamil Nadu state.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees expressed alarm over the attack and urged Sri Lankans to show empathy for civilians fleeing persecution and violence.

Almost half a million Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar for Bangladesh since August 25.

They have been the target of decades of state-backed persecution and discrimination in the mainly Buddhist country, where many view them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

A handful of thugs in robes does not represent Sri Lankans, Their government, Buddhist community or their clergy.. Attacking unarmed women and kids is as reprehensible as it comes what ever the circumstances are, Animals is a too softer term to describe them

Sri Lanka police hunt monks who behaved like 'animals'

ECONOMYNEXT - Police have arrested a man and woman for taking part in a violent demonstration against Rohingya refugees and are looking for several others, including three Buddhist monks who led the mob and "behaved like animals."

Police said a search was underway for monk Akmeemana Dayaratne and two other monks who orchestrated the mob violence against the UN safe house where 31 refugees were sheltered.

Video footage broadcast live on Facebook by the monks themselves showed them inciting violence and urging bystanders to storm the multi-storied building where 16 children and seven women and seven men huddled in upstairs rooms.

On Saturday, a 42-year-old woman from Ratmalana and a 34-year-old man from Moratuwa were arrested for taking part in the violence, police said in a statement.

The Rohingya refugees had been rescued by Sri Lanka's navy while they drifted off the island's north in April and handed over to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The UN refugee agency arranged the safe house in Mount Lavinia pending their resettlement in a third country.

Buddhist monk Akmeemana Dayaratne led the group calling itself the Sinhale Jathika Balamuluwa (Sinhalese National Force) which stormed the premises by breaking down its gates and smashed windows and furniture and forced the occupants out while armed police stood by without taking any action against the perpetrators of the violence.

However, police moved the refugees to the Boossa detention centre in Galle fearing more attacks on the Rohingya if they remained at Mount Lavinia.

Galle magistrate yesterday issued a restraining order on monk Dayaratne and his supporters following reports that they were planning to stage another demonstration outside the Boossa detention centre.

Cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said the government condemned in the strongest possible terms the storming of the UN safe house and said the monks were a disgrace to all Buddhists.

"As a Buddhist I am ashamed at what happened," Senaratne told reporters.

"Mothers carrying very young children were forced out...," he said. "These monks who led the attack are not Buddhists. They acted like animals (thirisan)"

Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera agreed and said the attack was carried out "by a group of thugs in robes."

Video footage released by the attackers themselves on facebook showed a saffron-robed monk breaking down a gate and then climbing a wall and demanding that onlookers enter the refugee centre and destroy it.

Minister Senaratne was also highly critical of the local police for their failure to prevent the attack and said stern action should be taken against senior officers for dereliction of duty.

The Law and Order ministry said three separate investigations had been launched.

Sri Lanka's extremist Buddhist monks have close links with their ultra-nationalist counterparts in Myanmar, but the radical BBS, or Bodu Bala Sena, denied any hand in Tuesday's attack and said refugees must be treated with compassion.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees expressed alarm over Tuesday's attack and urged Sri Lankans to show empathy for civilians fleeing persecution and violence.

Sri Lankan authorities have arrested seven people, including at least one Buddhist monk, suspected of storming a United Nations safe house for Rohingya Muslim refugees last week, reports the Associated press.

Monk Akmeenmana Dayaratana and another suspect were arrested Monday and ordered to remain behind bars until at least October 9, said police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara. He said the other five suspects were arrested and remanded over the weekend.

They are accused of being among dozens of protesters from Sri Lanka’s majority Buddhist community, including monks, who stormed a safe house on the outskirts of Colombo where 31 Rohingya Muslims who fled Myanmar, including 17 children, had been living since arriving in the country in April. The monks claimed the refugees were terrorists and demanded they be returned to Myanmar, prompting police to move the refugees to another location.

Video posted on Facebook by a nationalist group, the Sinhala National Movement, shows protesters calling Rohingya “terrorists who killed Buddhists in Myanmar” and saying that they can’t live in Sri Lanka.

The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said in a news release that it was alarmed by the attack. Sri Lankan government leaders also condemned it, describing it as a “shameful act,” and calling for strong action against the perpetrators.

Sri Lanka Buddhists make up 70% of the island’s 20 million people, while Muslims account for 10%.

More than half-a-million Rohingya have fled from the region to Bangladesh in just over a month, making it the largest refugee crisis to hit Asia in decades. The latest violence began when a Rohingya insurgent group launched deadly attacks on security posts August 25, prompting Myanmar’s military to launch “clearance operations.”

Rohingya have long faced persecution and discrimination in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where the government denies them citizenship and considers them illegal immigrants. Extremist Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka have ties with their counterparts in Myanmar and monks in both countries have been accused of leading attacks on minority Muslims.

Been to Sri Lanka. Nice place. I think these Burmese monks need to be taken out

Goes to show that a number of priests belonging to any religion - Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and even Buddhism are basically fanatics - not all but a significant number. All religions preach Peace - if only the clergy understood that.

SriLanka showed how a civilized nation behave. Good work.
