ANGELA MERKEL IDENTIFIES U.S. AS GLOBAL RIVAL THAT, ALONG WITH CHINA AND RUSSIA, EUROPE MUST UNITE AGAINST

“They [China, Russia and the U.S.] are forcing us, time and again, to find common positions. That is often difficult given our different interests. But we do get this done—think, for example, of our policy regarding the conflict in Ukraine,” Merkel added. “Our policies on Africa, too, now follow a common strategy, which a few years ago would have been unthinkable. So we keep putting one foot in front of the other. However, our political power is not yet commensurate with our economic strength.”

The comments hinted at the fact that at least some European leaders no longer view the United States as primarily an ally of the European Union. Merkel, for example, pointed to the U.S. dominance of technology as a challenge for Europe. U.S. companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon have long dominated global markets, and in some high-profile cases have gotten into long legal battles with the EU over antitrust and regulatory policy.

In March, the British government released a report recommending that the country establish a new regulator to monitor the activities of major tech giants. The European Union’s commissioner for competition has issued billions of dollars in fines for Google, and additional probes into Amazon and Google are ongoing. But European companies have still struggled to compete with Silicon Valley due to a dearth of venture capital on the continent.

Meanwhile, the U.S. relationship with Europe has become increasingly uncertain under President Donald Trump, who has criticized both the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The U.S. and EU are also still locked in negotiations over proposed tariffs on auto parts.

Reports recently suggested that Trump might delay the implementation of new tariffs as he continues to fight his trade war with China and negotiate with Europe and Japan. But the president has only until May 18 to decide whether to levy new tariffs on auto parts coming from Europe. Many analysts have argued against stymieing trade with a U.S. ally.

EU officials, meanwhile, have pledged to retaliate with their own set of tariffs if the U.S. moves forward with the plan. Cecilia Malmström, the chief trade negotiator for the EU, said the European Union is preparing a list of U.S. products that would be subject to tariffs if Trump moves forward with his protectionist measures.

Germany and EU will use this China US row as an opportunity to shake off US yoke.

That is the sane position. Let's see how sane 'European leaders' will be. France has two pro-US leaders - Macron and Le Pen; on the other hand - the Germans and Italians are more independent. Of the three PP in the UK, 2 are anti-Amerikan, only the Conservatives are pro-US bomb the world foreign policy. Europeans are much more saner than the Amerikans, trouble is, zionists are often promoted in the PP, zionists look for the insane narcissistic to be qualified to run for office, or at least those are the individuals promoted by the zionists in the media. Look at how Corbyn is treated for being opposed to more wars for zionist lobby. The insane treat the sane poorly in Europe.

What would you call a person mumbling about the need to murder 5 million Persians, either call that individual John Bolton or insane. The sane are not mass murderers.

translation: I want EU to separate from US

As long as the Russian bear growls the EU will stay attached to USA via NATO

I think the Russian threat is overestimated, the EU has the money, technology and man power to keep Russia in check if it wanted to. Furthermore, Russia needs the EU for economic reasons, it is their biggest market for oil and gas exports and they too understand that a stable Europe is good for business. I believe the Europeans and Russians can find agreements on common grounds and maintain a relationship of interest, the US however has been the protector of Europe for decades but times are slowly changing.

A more integrated Europe is underway and a common defense policy and framework is underway as well through PESCO. I believe in 15-20 years Europe will be a single entity along with the US and China on the global stage as a multilateral world composed of super powers, the three aforementioned entities being super powers.

Russia has no interest in changing their internal political system to reflect a free market liberal democracy
As far as single European entity goes it can happen. West Europeans have to dump their misguided immigration policies.

The Europeans dealt with powerful Russia for centuries, I think they understand each other quite well and understand each other's limits.

Where did Angela Merkel actually say what is written in the headline?

I am always been amused how Americans love to think about Russia-European relations. We were one of major European powers since Middle Ages. And most of that time we had quite good relations with Western part of the continent. And we still will after American occupation troops leave Europe. In fact Germany, Italy and France have no natural ally like Russia, because outsiders-American presence is a temporary thing and inland relations are the eternal thing.
Europeans internal affairs is not your business, America. Your business is in Western Hemisphere.

I don't see where you misunderstood me, I noted that the EU can deal with Russia without the US presence with no problem through both economic, and realpolitik terms. Let's be honest here, The EU if it wanted to could mount a military force to keep Russia shaking for eternity. However, history shows that both European powers and Russia tend to have good relations and depend on each other for many things.

Finally, I too am European and I understand quite a bit of how internal Europe works.

Western European - Russian history says otherwise. Centuries of wars. Russo-Swedish war starts 1495 and continued for centuries.

Britain on it's way out,France seems to care for it's own interests only,Germany is the only one who seems to care about this "united Europe" stuff.Judging by the disagreements inside EU itself i seriously doubt Europe will be powerful on the level the US is,even though it has a huge potential to be a superpower I just don't see it happening in near future.

No, I was not criticizing you. My post was referring to some US members here who think European states are banana republics and can not defend themselves without USA-master.

Actually Russo-Swedish wars started in 1142 when Swedish knights went to the first Northern Crusade on Rus, although Rus was baptized before Sweden. Just like all the other European states fighting each other untill the 20th ct.

Meh, we can easily pull case studies from the past 800+ years of how Russia and European powers clashed, however the point is that they worked more together than fought, and they understand each other simply by being neighbors.
