The Bangla-language daily Prothom Alo is "an enemy of the Awami League, democracy, and the people of Bangladesh", says Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Those who speak out against corruption are now talking in favour of the people who are convicted in corruption cases, Hasina said during a session in parliament on Monday.

“A seven-year-old child was encouraged to tell a lie by paying him Tk 10. And that too for a statement like -- we need the freedom to ensure meat and rice [food] for everyone.”

“They published his words. It was all done by a popular daily. The name is Prothom Alo [First Light], but they act under cover of darkness," she said.

The MPs banged on their tables in agreement with the prime minister, saying ‘shame, shame’. They also sounded their support when Hasina described the Prothom Alo as an enemy of the Awami League, democracy and the people.

“With a heavy heart, I must say that they never want stability in the country. They were elated when an emergency was declared in 2007. It was then that two newspapers rolled up their sleeves [to achieve their goals],” Hasina said.

“They were accompanied by another person who built a business out of accumulating interest on loans. That person was dear to the United States. The US never raised the question of how the MD of Grameen Bank, a legally registered social business organisation, had millions of dollars. Did they ever ask about the source of money at home and abroad?”

Now the same people who siphoned money from the poor, are speaking of a ‘war against corruption’ and ‘humanity,’ Hasina said. “They bag international awards, work to destroy democracy and spoil the fortunes of the ordinary people.”

“They are trying to eliminate democracy and introduce a government that will not act democratically. It will be an undemocratic action. Some of our intellectuals, who live on selling their intellect, keep licking the boots of those [corrupt people] for a little money,” Hasina said.

US CAN TOPPLE GOVERNMENT IN ANY COUNTRY
The US does not practise its democratic norms beyond the Atlantic, said Hasina. “Does the definition of democracy change when it comes to the [countries on the other side of the Atlantic]? Why are you supporting a military dictator? I raised this question earlier and I’m raising it again,” she said.

The US lectures Bangladesh on democracy to the cheers of the opposition parties, she said. “They are lecturing us on democracy and human rights. What’s the situation in their country?”

“It has the power to topple the government in any country and the Muslim countries, in particular, are experiencing a tough time.”

“They are trying to eliminate democracy and introduce a government that will not have a democratic existence. It’ll be an undemocratic action. Some of our intellectuals, who live on selling their intellect, just keep licking the boots of those [corrupt people] only for a little money.”

Hasina Bibi, if becoming anti-BAL means anti-BD, no doubt majority of BD people are anti-BD. Your days will soon end and you will take shelter in China.

The fact that she reacted like this to a simple perfunctory item published in Prothom Alo is testament to what kind of situation and pressure she is under. Not even Bharat Mata can save her - jawab de dia. Her days are indeed numbered.

And the biggest joke is that she defended looting in the name of "stability".

Stable enough for Bangladesh to be looted to the bone I guess, by her family members.

Mujiblings are not satisfied with simple looting by taking graft anymore - my business chamber friends tell me. Mujib family members are now willfully targeting lucrative businesses so they can forcefully take ownership (40% or more) otherwise they will sink your business in no time flat. Greedy people......

This is getting to the point exactly like before Mujib met his fate - BKSAL-ism in another name.

like it or not but Hasina is showing some guts here by targeting the US with confrontational languge.

Now it will recieve a response from US State department. Bring the popcorn

Yes, but Hasina Bibi should be happy that the USA wants to re-establish democracy in BD. And America believes your BAL party will be rejected by the population in a fair and free election.

By the way, have people noticed that Hasina is unable to meet/ contact the US President? She stayed in the house of his great-son, Joy Kumar for ten days, but could not get an appointment.

Now, she blames Dr. Yunus.

Not only that. All visiting US dignitaries avoid meeting Hasina Bibi. Her only wish now is not to hang by the rope for murdering 57 BA officers in Pilkhana.

It is also possible that the US govt would ask for her extradition and try her for conspiring to murder Abhjit, a US citizen.

Will elections take place in 2024? Would like to see free and fair elections and to see if BNP can make a comeback or any new visionary party can come to power. At the moment it looks like Shiekh Hasina is mother Teressa of Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi people would like free and fair elections but what changes will the opposition bring or reforms so Bangladeshi people can benefit.

The problem is there is no credible opposition who can actually run the country effectively.
A weak party taking charge would be useless as BAL would paralyse them with violent street agitations across the country.

So is BAL a powerful political party in Bangladesh then, if they have the people support then so be it. Just like Pakistan I don't see any new educated leaders coming to Bangladesh politics. If you look at Indonesia they have so many new people trying for the presidential elections. In Pakistan we have the Nawaz, Bhuttos, Zardaris, Molvis ruling for decades, only IK was the new guy.

Bangladesh has two real political parties: BAL and Jamat-e-Islami Bangladesh. These are two solid organisations with strong grassroots base across the country.

You can go gun down BAL's presidium council or JeI's Majlis-e-Shura, the organisation would still survive.

The rest of the political parties are mainly creations of local and foreign intelligence agencies with little to no grassroots base.
BNP was hatched at the DGFI HQ in the late 70s.

There are young leaders who are willing to bring change and run the country but they do not have enough clout to win seats across the country and actually run a government.

BAL and JI is exactly what is needed in Asia, we need leaders to retire after 2 terms and let new leaders overtake so fresh leadership can bring out new ideas to take the nation forward. I am not talking about the negative things but their organisations which can bring out new leaders every 5 to 10 years.

In Indonesia they have governors from different areas standing up for presidential elections, so they already have the experience in the highest level to take the president chair. Iran is also very advance, they changed alot of presidents and they all were former governors, MPs, mayors etc. Pakistan on the other hand have Bhuttos, Zardaris, Nawaz, Mullahs etc, the same old people for decades, plus it depends how much money you have to reach the high level, not your skills.

We are truly between a rock and hard place on this. Sigh....
