An article, Hoodbhoy doesn't want you to read.

.
one of these are Arundhati

She goes both ways. I think that she is a critique who has guts. Narmada issue for example and Women's rights in India.

On the other hand, she thinks Maoists are some sort of victims, when the Naxalites themselves have used extortion and Child soldiers in their forces.

The tribals have legitimate grievances against the state forces who sometimes tend to use indiscriminate violence. But saying people who use child soldiers as freedom fighters is till going too farr

From both @Capt.Popeye & @Bhai Zakir we have more trolling than everyone else on this topic put together. Rather than discuss the points raised by the article, they are discussing the importance of their perceptions - and we all know what those perceptions are....

Chinese have put in a lot of R&D effort into their nuclear reactor design. It would be irresponsible to belittle it for sake of point scoring. I do not take Dr. Hoodbhoy seriously. I know enough physics to know that he is not talking about physics when he discusses nuclear power.

Indians trolls are just trying to cure their heart-burn by bitching about this deal. If Dr. Hoodbhoy were to say something critical about India, these trolls will forget his knowledge of physics in a heartbeat.

You're out of your depth here, dude. regardless of whatever "Physics" that you may claim to know.....
Hoodbhoy is an activist and therefore sometimes he is an alarmist. And alarmists tend to be shrill, but that is all. Therefore they can be unpopular. Just as Hoodbhoy is: in certain "uninformed circles".
But he still knows his Physics, esp Nuclear Physics. And certainly more than some self-appointted poseur....aka the diplomat who is railing against his views.

Now ; safety systems have improved in Nuclear Plants since their first advent or from the "Fukushima Gen" BWR plants. But their efficacy are still in some niggling doubts, even wrt PWRs . More so in case of the Chinese designs which are not commonly available for asssessment and audit Internationally. In any case the Chinese Nuclear Estt. is not the paragon of transparency and probity to facilitate that. So the doubts have persistently remained in the international arena.
The only design that has consistently held up on safety grounds has been the CANDU design. But, Nuclear Reactors will always have some clouds of uncertainty hovering over them.

Therefore you will be better off refraining from your irrational and emotional outbursts.

As for the writer of the piece: i.e. some Ali Sarwar Naqvi aka "ex-diplomat"; all I'll say is........Who's he?
Anybody tends to be an analist or prophet nowadays; i.e. a Poseur!

1. We can discuss this topic without any particular outside reference to who Dr. Hoodbhoy is, or is not. Discussion stands on its merits, not on degrees of participants.

2. There is no particularly involved bit of physics relating to this particular topic that would exercise an engineer like me.

3. While you admit that safety has generally improved, you still have an issue with 'the nature' of transparency or lack thereof when it comes to Chinese products. On the other hand you project CANDU design as a benchmark of safety. Your distaste for Chinese products is duly noted and I shall attribute your nationality based narrative as a function of your own nationality, and not a mark of dispassionate analysis, as is obvious.

4. You might want to research the development of Chinese atomic power program. I do believe free access given by Pakistan to Chinese engineers to CANDU design back in the '70s was a good boost. Chinese designs have only developed beyond that. So, I would have no problem trusting them. I do not have an automatic visceral dislike of things Chinese like you do. I can be more trusting.

.
Add to that the huge inflow of civil nuclear technology that happened in China over the past decade and a half the have JV, ToT agreements and are manufacturing top of the line GenIII/GenIII+ reactors from Westinghouse and Areva.
