Amnesty, rehabilitation deal for Maoists in Jharkhand - Hindustan Times

Jharkhand Director General of Police (DGP) Neyaz Ahmed has said the Maoist rebels who lay down arms might be considered for amnesty and will also be rehabilitated. "We have come to know form our sources that at few places, there is a lot of agitation amongst the Maoists and we are being approached by them to surrender. We have given a positive response to the Maoists hopeful that many will surrender," said Neyaz Ahmed.

The DGP further said the Jharkhand Government has announced a new scheme 'Operation Nai Disha' for the Naxal-affected areas in the State.

"As per the scheme, the Maoists, who surrendered with rocket launchers would receive Rs one lakh, Rs 75,000 for AK-47 and sniper rifles etc, Rs 15,000 for a .303 rifle, Rs 2,000 for a hand grenade and Rs 2,000 per kilogram for explosive materials," said Neyaz Ahmed.

"A development package for the Maoist-hit areas was under consideration, which would generate several jobs," he added.

Meanwhile, the police honoured kin of police officials who were killed fighting the ultras at a function in Jharkhand's Gumla District on Saturday.

"We are very pleased that the authorities are honouring the families of martyrs. I am very proud of my father and all the police officials, who got killed while fighting the Maoists," said Rekha Kumari, daughter of a slain police official.

"All the families of police officials, who were martyred while fighting the Maoists were called today. We heard their problems and whether they have received the insurance money and ex-gratia money or not. We noted down all their problems," said Gumla Superintendent of Police (SP) NK Singh.

The Maoist issue is a Law Enforcement problem which is off-shoot of Socio-Economic imbalances created by inept regimes. I do not consider it to be a National security problem. I am for Amnesty but to what extent can this help reduction of violence should be accessed.

Everyone deserves a second chance.....

Since its economic incentives that the Maoists fight for, this may be a good start to coax them to surrender arms.....however a longterm solution to assimilate the maoists into mainstream society and providing jobs along with development should be our main goal....

GOI needs to stop with its short-sighted policies and look to invest in long term development.....even if it costs us more....

Prime example: railways.....we have overlooked the longterm advantages of high speed rails, which countries like China are actively inducting at the cost of huge sums, but with a clear cut advantage that will put them miles ahead of the game in the future....
