Amid border tensions, Chinese Engineers dig tunnel for Delhi Metro line

New Delhi: Amid the media brouhaha in India over the border incursions by their troops, Chinese engineers were last week calmly tunneling in the heart of the national capital for the heritage line of the Delhi Metro network, signifying the growing commercial linkages between the two neighbours.

Engineers of the Shanghai Urban Construction Group (SUCG) lowered a massive 300-tonne Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) into a crater that was once a park in the shadows of the city's main mosque - the 17th century Jama Masjid in old Delhi.

A station will be built here as part of the Delhi Metro's 9.37 km Central Secretariat- Kashmiri Gate corridor, also called the heritage line because of its proximity to many monuments."Tunneling this section is quite a difficult and sensitive job because of so many historic monuments here. The task is complicated by the rocky and sandy nature of the soil in this section," Lu Yuanqiang, chairman, SUCG Infrastructure India, told IANS on location.

SUCG has formed a joint venture (JV) with Indian conglomerate L&T that has been awarded different projects by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). With another Indian company, it has already constructed the New Delhi Elevated Subway (viaduct) for the second phase of DMRC's project.

Mr Lu said his company had the expertise required to stabilise the soil in rocky areas where tunneling disturbs stability and increases the risk of subsidence.

On the Mandi House-ITO section of the line, where soil conditions were much better, 500 metres (of the 750-metre long section) of tunnel had been constructed, he said.

The JV's 2009 tunnel section for the Delhi Metro Airport Express - again requiring specialised expertise - was completed well before schedule, Mr Lu said.

The heritage line is located nine metres below the existing ramp for the Dwarka-Noida/Vaishali line and runs for 80 metres along the corridor.

"The work has to be meticulous as it's coming up under an operational corridor," Shen Chenming, the project director, told IANS. Shen, who has been in Delhi for nearly five years, leads the workforce that is largely Chinese.

Mr Lu pointed out the difficulties that could arise from externalities in what is otherwise a fruitful collaboration between Indian and Chinese businesses.

"Specifically we face visa problems, delays and uncertainties if the relationship runs into complications for political reasons," he said.

From the business perspective, he had special praise for India, where, he said, public opinion ensures that it is "fair" for those wanting to do business.

"India is a very important market for us. The Indian market is open, fair and just, while active public opinion ensures this, at least from our experience in the contsruction sector," Mr Lu said.

The SUCG-L&T JV also has the contract for constructing the tunnel and stations for the Delhi Metro's Vasant Vihar-Hauz Khas section.

This definitely would be a learning step for Indian engineers working along with the Chinese crew....

China and India can be world's biggest trading partner by its size alone, which can help each others economy!

It is always a treat to speak to a genuine Chinese...I say that because I see many false flaggers trying their best to hijack the forum. And any crap against India is always welcomed.

Yes, both can be biggest trading partners as well as economic giants surpassing the monopoly of the west. Hope there would be more in years ahead.

What proportion of the cost of the metro goes to China do you think? Well under 0.1%. There is no shame in taking assistance from those who know more than you. The Delhi metro was the first metro in all of India so naturally outside experts were brought in other wise it would've been a cluster f*** from the get go. The Chinese had significantly more experience in such arenas than India at the time- they had previously constructed many metros, India had not. Today, with the help of the Japense,French,Chinese,Germens,Canadians etc the Delhi metro is one of the best and largest subway systems on the planet- all sides win.


For sure Indian players are now filling this niche and applying the lessons they have learnt from foreigners-look at newer metro projects, the foreign involvement is signifanclty less.

If China and India can get together for a military, energy and economic alliance, the world would be at their feet! The border dispute must be sorted out at the earliest so that these two giants can establish a New World Order that the US of A has been trying to do since the last couple of decades and failed.

China and India makes up 1/3 rd of humanity, this is common sense..1/3 rd humanity can change this world..the only thing is there are certain forces who do not want these two giants together for their own benefits..also internal poltics of the two countries because of the influence of other countries

This is exactly what I wanted to emphasize when the two giants do business with each other..the trust develops and so the defense spending decreases, India will emphasize more on indegenization as compared to buying off the shelf since then they will not have urgent threat preception which they have due to the mistrust developed with its neighbours

Several Chinese companies are presently working in several infrastructure projects here. The recent stand off did not hamper these projects due to both the government's sane efforts to sort out the problem. What I hope is Indian media should do less TRP specific journalism from next time.
