Americans have given nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars in private donations to help tsunami-wracked communities, a report said, as Japan marked the second anniversary of the disaster on Monday.

Individuals, companies and non-profit groups have donated $712.6 million to help crisis-stricken areas over the last 24 months, the Japan Center for International Exchange said in a report released last week.

The private sector total is the largest ever given to a developed country and the third biggest disaster donation after those for the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2010 quake in Haiti, it said.

The largest donor was the American Red Cross, which gave $312 million, followed by Save the Children, USA, which raised $26.15 million, it said.

Japan is marking the second anniversary of the ferocious tsunami, which left nearly 19,000 people dead or missing, and sparked the worst nuclear accident in a generation.

Efforts to rebuild the disaster-hit region have been slow; figures show 315,196 people are still without a permanent home, many in cramped temporary housing units.

I think Chinese people contribution (including from Taiwan) is being censored in Japan.

And may be twisted the aid to as garbage that harm innocent Japanese children and elderly people.

115 US soldiers, perhaps more, are determined to claim back 712.6 million dollars through court of law。

Heck, they as a group may ask for more for their role in (nuclear)disaster relief。

Considering China has refused to attend the Japanese tsunami ceremony, I'd say the Chinese have done more than anyone to censor their contribution or lack of it, of their own free will.
@cirr- why are you trolling? The soldiers are not filing suit as representatives of the United States, nor are they filing suit directly against the government of Japan.

Likewise, even if the soldiers won reparation damages to possible needless exposure to radiation, it wouldn't be taken from 'aid' money.

Your poor attempt to associate the two is illogical and mind-boggling.

It is obvious you are just trying to stir up flames where none exists.

Just googled, South Korea refused too, probably many other countries. And what this has to do with censorship? Your poor attempt to associate the two is illogical and mind-boggling.

that's something they owe Japanese people.
