It's not a matter of popularity within the republican house itself, it's a matter of electability. The Republicans know they'll lose if Trump gets the party ticket, the mid terms were evidence of just how weak their position is almost exclusively due to Trump.

They'll try to sabotage him, just like the democrats sabotaged Bernie Sanders.

You make valid points, however Trump certainly has enough diehard followers in the Republican party that I don't think anyone can really challenge him for the nomination. Popularity matters to republican voters who will ultimately decide who will receive the nomination.

I'm calling it now, 2024 will be Trump Biden round 2
