America did have a first, but it was reckless. They risked a man's life knowing how dangerous it was. They did not do it according to procedure: rover first, then man.

Russia had far more firsts: first satellite, first space suit, first man in space, first space walk, first interplanetary lander, first space station, first rover, first modular space station, first fully automated space shuttle.

America had first man on moon, but 1 accomplishment does not beat many accomplishments.
