I thought so too from the thread title, but Wired is a legitimate news source. The news is correct, I believe the Pentagon itself commented on it.

Anyway, it's in fact Israel who have a policy (the Samson Option) to destroy the entire Middle East with nuclear weapons in the event that they are destroyed.

They target Mecca and Medina because they think it is the best deterrence against any Muslim nation trying to nuke them.
