WASHINGTON — The United States criticized Russia on Wednesday for approving sales of fighter jets to Myanmar’s military despite its deadly operations against Rohingya Muslims, warning that Moscow’s actions could make the situation worse.

Russian defense officials used a visit to Myanmar this week to announce a deal to deliver six Su-30 fighter jets to the country’s military. The Russian officials said Myanmar is also interested in buying Russian navy ships and land weapons.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert called Russia’s move to provide the jets “a good example of the challenges we face with certain governments.” She said most of the world wants the Rohingya crisis resolved peacefully, and suggested Russia’s actions would instead fuel more suffering and instability.

“This would seem to be an occasion where Russia could show solidarity through humanitarian assistance rather than potentially aggravating the situation through weapons sales,” Nauert said.

The admonition comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Russia, including over Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine and elsewhere. On Tuesday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Moscow was responsible for chemical weapons attacks in Syria for failing to rein in Syrian President Bashar Assad and his forces — an accusation that Russia firmly rejected.

The United States and many others refuse to sell weapons to Myanmar. In October, the U.S. restricted what limited non-weapons assistance it provides to Myanmar’s military and its leaders, specifically cutting off those involved in the violence in northern Rakhine state — ground zero for the Rohingya crisis. Some 700,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar to neighboring Bangladesh since August, when the military launched operations that the United States has described as “ethnic cleansing.”

On Wednesday, former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson resigned from an international advisory panel on the crisis, calling it a “whitewash and a cheerleading operation” for Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The sudden resignation cast a shadow over global efforts to deal with the crisis and raised further questions about Suu Kyi’s leadership.

The six fighter jets aren’t the first arms Myanmar has bought from Russia. In the past, the country has purchased MiG-29 fighter jets, Yak-130 combat trainers, Mi-17, Mi-24 and Mi-35 combat helicopters and other weapons, Alexander Fomin, a Russian deputy defense minister, said in Myanmar on Monday.

“I’m sure that Russia-Myanmar military-technical cooperation will develop further to allow Myanmar to build up a modern military armed with high-tech Russian weapons,” Fomin said, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

Meanwhile, workers on the Myanmar side of the border with Bangladesh laid bricks, dug ditches and drilled holes in building frames in preparation Wednesday for the possible repatriation of some of the Rohingya Muslims who have poured into Bangladesh in what’s become the world’s worst refugee crisis.

There was no sign, however, of any of the nearly 700,000 Rohingya chased away by Myanmar security forces.

Myanmar invited journalists from The Associated Press and other media to the border to show it’s ready for a gradual repatriation. But Bangladesh says it needs more time to prepare for the transfer.

The refugees, meanwhile, are deeply skeptical, if not outright terrified, about returning to a place where they say their homes were burned, their wives, sisters and mothers raped, and their friends, relatives and neighbors slaughtered.

This means that, despite the construction efforts on the Myanmar side of the border, no repatriation seems likely any time soon.

Only interests in this world with little humanity.
US is a hypocrite that gives free arms to the Jewish occupiers of Palestine and supplies the terrible Saudi Regime that is slaughtering innocents in Yemen.

Nothing wrong in Russia and China supplying the legitimate Myanmar government with all the weapons they can afford to defend their country and interests.
So I don't think the U. S should be getting that involved on this one. If anything we should have been trying to bring Myanmar closer to the West and open up more. Myanmar reformed it's system a d was opening up to the West. So we should have encouraged them to carry on instead of adopting a hostile stance because of some rohingyas. After all, the West will still be criticised whether they condemn/sanction Myanmar for the rohingyas issue or not.
So better to adopt the stance of Russia and China. :)

Nothing Surprising where china + russia one side we will see USA another side.

What an enlightened western position you have.

Myanmar decided to become China's puppet state for one reason or another.
West went against them as they had nothing to gain from supporting their genocide.
Anyway, even if the West had something to gain, the Myanmarese regime is far too evil for any Western
government to publicly support.
You need to pay a bit more attention to the culture that is prevalent
in the West.
Even though the Saudi regime is nowhere near as evil as the Myanmarese one, look at the
amount of criticism the UK governments get for being friendly with them. Supporting a regime of murders and rapists would no go down too well with the civil societies in the West.

Myanmar is an independent country and can perfectly decide for itself if it wants to go with the West or with China or stay neutral. Some of the comments on this thread are immature and highly biased.

The reason Myanmar is facing what it is because of the power game being played between the West and China/Russia. Myanmar destabilization is exactly what happened in Syria, Libya, and countless other countries before they were destroyed. And there is only one Super terrorist country doing this and we all know who is it. Any other justification is just a load of BS and pure fairy tale.

Libya Syria destroyed because the had a dictator sitting on their neck for the last 7 decades. Their people and army gone against them. West just took a side and it was the opposition. Russia wanted to hanfg on to the regime as they had very few allies in the world and they cant afford to loose one.

You don't know what you are talking about. Keep believing in what you want since the Reality is vastly different. Good luck.

I beg to disagree. Here American humanitarian concern superceded their material interest in burma.Otherwise it would had compete with China+Russia for burmese favor and appease burma for potential lucrative investment deal.

Of course, USA is not always right. But it doesn't mean you can't appreciate them when they are right.Even with Trump, they have taken a principled position in this case.Compare this with nakedly greedy and inhuman position taken by China,Russia and India.

Humanitarian concern still a part of American foreign policy. That's why they intervened in Somali civil war and risked the life of their soldier when Somali rebels prevented food from reaching the starving population, That's why they bombed Serbia to stop slaughtering Kosovo muslim despite red eye from Russia+China and little or no potential benefit provided by an independent Kosovo. In 1st and 2nd world war, they were on the right side of history as well as in Korean and Vietnam war.You can debate American excess in Vietnam. But do not say, they were wrong helping South Vietnam to repel Chinese backed communist north vietnamese invasion of South Vietnam.Saddam and Gaddafi type dictators are the reason America had to intervene militarily in Middle East.Do not say, Saddam, Gaddafi or those Taliban guy in Afghansitan were innocent and America done wrong waging war on them.It is true, America had it's moment of transgression and wrong move due to complex geo-political factors.Still America is an enlightened, democratic force in the world much much better then her opponents.

Nothing wrong even if they do a genocide using those supplied weapons?

Do not give any importance to his opinion. He is a far-right type of guy in UK. His opinion doesn't represent majority of western public who appreciate the principle of human rights and democratic values.
