AMD the subject of takeover rumors by Chinese firm

x86 is a TOO BIG A SECRET to transfer.....

dude, US government listed both x86 chipset core tech and TCPIP protocol as Top Secret, unless China can pass an NSA vetting, or somehow China can acquire AMD Without x86 chipset blueprint, they are not gonna get AMD...

they may ask other giant to buy it, such as Microsoft..

Indeed. That is an option. But, does it have experience with the tech? The Chinese firm is in the processor business long time.

yeah but the premises is US wont allow Chinese firm to touch the x86 design....

And Microsoft being software/OS developement, they have some processor operation in the experience, if not, theycan always ask Qualcomm to take over...or a joint venture

:what:

below is specifications for ip and tcp... they are open...

RFC 791 - Internet Protocol ( internet protocol )
https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc793.txt ( transmission control protocol )

and x86 instruction set and general architecture can be found in any intel processor programming book, for example by author barry b. brey.

how are they top secret??

or somehow China can acquire AMD Without x86 chipset blueprint, they are not gonna get AMD...

amd build clones of intel x86 processors... that is their only identity.

what you want to say probably is the legal and commercial aspect of such a deal.

If they really sell AMD to China, with our investment & market, we can save them. buy AMD will save a lot of time for developing Chinese microchip, really a good deal for China

i don't understand.

1. why should china save amd??

2. china already has the godson processor which uses mips instruction set ( risc architecture )... risc is also the architecture that arm company uses in its processor design, and arm instructions set is what most cell phones and small devices use... china can innovate from their experience of the godson processor.

best is china buy amd and shut it down.

oh i get it, you believe the IP protocol is the one Darpa make, carry on...(hint US Army runs a different TCPIP network called secured net, i was referring to that one)

And am not talking about architecture on CPU. I can send you a how to guide to make the printing plate to print money, how to press and how to dent a.metal, does that mean you can print actual US money that can be use as legal tender?

1.AMD still have a lot of good things that we need to learn, Godson is still not good enough. If we can turn AMD into a Chinese company and with government support, AMD can become stronger & fight against Intel powerfully, all CPU price will go down, people can spend less money and buy better CPU.

2.Just like I have said, godson is only for military, rarely can be seen in Chinese market. So we need something more powerful like AMD.

In the end, if we really buy it, we will try our best to boost its market rate and make it to be a profitable company. we will not let a profitable company down.

I've been a AMD fanboy since 2008, but now I dunno.
good value, but Intel/Nvidia just killing it nowadays.
don't think even China could save AMD in the short term.

I've been using AMD CPUs since 1999!! They had a great thing going for them, and then i don't know what happened.....since the end of their k7 and Athlon 64 run, they were not able to compete with Intel on anything. They missed the mobile market to ARM just like Intel, and then the server market to Intel as well. They bought ATI and did good with Radeon......but you can use your GPU stream to support your CPU streams. One way or the other this was going to happen, unless they partner with ARM and target mobile market specifically. It will be a sad thing to see AMD go, because then Intel will be back to selling crappy products with no competition to deal with.

AMD cannot become a Chinese company, even if Chinese owned 100% of it's share, because it's physical facilities are located in Europe/USA. It will be hard to retain the talent to work in China.......

china is not india or israel that usa army will transfer such extra protocol stuff... i am sure russia and china have their own secure network methods, and even india will only get the equipment and not source code of the programs/protocols running within.

And am not talking about architecture on CPU. I can send you a how to guide to make the printing plate to print money, how to press and how to dent a.metal, does that mean you can print actual US money that can be use as legal tender?

what is your point??

fight against Intel powerfully, all CPU price will go down, people can spend less money and buy better CPU.

that is indeed important... in fact, processors should be given by governments to citizens free... and the design should be open source.

First, you do know all the protocol we created as of today is just the adaptation of a DARPA internet protocol right? So we cna use it. Without giving you the core code of the internet, you can developement all the system you want, but US will still have way to look into whats inside, as long as the Russian or Chinese computer are connected to an American internet.

Unless China and Russia develope their own network protocol and do not connect to any US network at all, othersise the word "Secure" does not applies.

The printing press i told you is an example, yes, the you can follow the architecture of the intel handbook, but does that mean you can make the same processor? If they do, would Russia and China or anyone would already be able to build CPU thats at least as capable as the intel latest computer? Even AMD licensed the x86 technology, there is a reason why their processor is considered inferior to intel, even AMD havea blue print how to build x86 architecture.

And you said you were in some sort of CPU project ? loo

.
jhungary, i agree with you mostly.

Unless China and Russia develope their own network protocol and do not connect to any US network at all, othersise the word "Secure" does not applies.

agreed... though the militaries in russia and china may used hardware-based and non-network methods to do secure communciation... as sword1947 said above, the chinese use their godson processor in military purposes.

Even AMD licensed the x86 technology, there is a reason why their processor is considered inferior to intel, even AMD havea blue print how to build x86 architecture.

well, amd processors are inferior clones of intel x86 because... (a). amd is not an innovative company, (b). intel has better people than amd.... amd did not invent anything, just some engineers rearranging the memory bus or i/o bus in a different fashion.

yes, and our project is quite unique, and it is also a political project ( socialist ) as much as technological.

your point about capability of russia and ( present lack in ) china to design processors leads to a point... of the 7+ billion people on earth, not every person or group can design a processor... look at india, at least 2 million computer engineers came out of colleges in the last ten years... are there thousands of processors and operating systems from india... no, not a single processor or os.

another point is difference between design capability and manufacturing capacity... any nation can set up a factory to produce a processor line... abu dhabi has amd and even india has a government plan... but that does not mean that abu dhabi or india can actually design a processor.

lastly, as you have seen in the russian processor thread a few days ago, in clocked processor category, their elbrus processor ( forgot the version ) gives good performance even with hardware emulation of x86 instructions... that was one of their design goals, so it must be appreciated.

....

I think we have gone too far

I am not saying Russian or India or China or whoever cannot make their own processor, just x86 is patented (to some extend x86-64 which was clone or reverse engineering by AMD and even x86-64 were considered inferior to original x86 architecture, still the US government consider this one of the biggest secret to sell to China or anyone else. Case closed

you know, my group first looked at x86 and soon we rejected it as being unnecessarily complicated and inefficient, and then we began designing our own instructions set and every thing else.

i hope china does the same as us... they should look at designing their own rather than buy amd or be satisfied with godson ( mips ).

russia has had the elbrus processor line since ussr days, and their present versions are good like i have been saying.

it is the indian industry and academic groups that i am saying are incapable of designing microprocessors... trust me on this... though some talented people here can be guided by some good leadership.

dude, i think you have a tendency of going off topic, how complicate or inefficient onx86 is beside the point, even tho if its as you say, that still does not explain why x86 is still the best chip set there s out there and better than Chinese and Russia chip set out there, if you are thinking x86 is too complicate and inefficient, probably that only mean your skill not good enough on how the design work, and if i have to take your word and sayt x86 is inferior or how intel peocessor is currently, BY FAR, the best processor there is in the market? Who really do care what you think? Maybe if India, China or Eussia or all 3 can make a better processor than intel, then maybe, just maybe would somebody five a damn about it

X86 patent and its core design is a closely guard secret, and selling them to China is a big no-no

I know, so I only say if. It's just a good wish from us

C'mon Congress threatened to block the sale of Maytag to Haier. The bid was withdrawn and Whirlpool bought them. You really think a sale of AMD has ANY chance?

You're saying Congress would intervene in a Public traded company's case?
