Altay & Turkish Main Battle Tank Programs

Recently there has been some good cooperation with the u.s why doesn't altay just use an american engine? Atak uses american engines, and so do all of the other jets, helicopters, and ground vehicles the TSK uses (except leopards).


they suck with that kind engine, So they are using jet engine for ther m1 abrams.

but the Japanese didn't allow export to third countries
i am also with the ukrainian engines,esspecially the 6-td3 with 1500 hp and the 6-td4 with 1800 hp

korea showed themselfes as trustworthy parter I would like more cooperation with korea :)

Great didnt knew South Korea was making Tank engines, this is a real alternative, Altay came with ToT from Korea, why not engines too?

Having assmebly capacity is one thing but developing An engine is totally a whole new different level

First check out the industry,then talk about assembly.
BMC,OTOKAR and TEMSA are Turkish companies,they dont do assembly but develope and produce the vehicles,yet no engine.
There is enough R&D experience but no Turkish engine .
We should at least have developed an indigenous car engine.
Btw,where are you from(cant see any flags)?

The classic dilemma we all face here. How could I have missed that.

Sir, you see it doesnt matter how much experience you gain from assembling the vehicle structure, its more or less like putting blocks together like Lego, Without an engine youre car is dead as junk, be it BMW or anything.

What puts life into these machines is engine. The hardest nut to crack. There are only handful countries who produces Miltary grade/heavy duty decent engine. and they have been doing it for about over 100+ years now those are industrial nations mainly.

Look at our Al khalid tank, I must say for a country like Pakistan that started without any manufacturing capacity or any decent factory putting a blocks of Al khalid is applaudable job considering the fact that we are an agricultural country with little or no industrial base. We only have One Still mill in whole country and One single port.

As opposed to Our neighbours 3 times our size with quite much industrial base inherited when British left, yet their products still cant be compared to chinese one.

Making an Engine might sound easy but trust me it is years and years of experience Accumulated combine this with knowledge gained to make industrial base supported by Vocational level training and developing a local engineering mindset will after years of hard work can give you some HOPE.

Designing and innovation will come through R&D as you've mentioned, But actually making an engine requires litrealy thousand of components which are individually Assembled in a factory. So what you have is big Manufacturer that guarantees A steady and smooth business while out sourcing nut bolts etc components to other Amalgamated firms.

For eg look at Ukraine they dont have R&D yet they have a decent heavy industrial capacity, their engines can stand out doesnt necessarily mean they are among best.

Moving into this direction and developing a base takes long time at least a generation if things go smoothly in the way you want.

Still, you gain bit by bit and then you move one on to whole new different level but if you dont youre just stuck in one place.

Pakistan and turkey have done commendable job in this sector although there is always room for improvement.

There's no reason to develop a car engine when there's no indigenous cars to put it in. A Turkish truck engine was developed, though - the Ecotorq. Released in 2003 and still in production today.

The engine problem isn't due to a lack of engineering knowledge, it's the lack of market pressure. There needs to be a big enough indigenous car industry in order for the corresponding car engine industry to develop. R&D costs to develop an engine are high, there has to be enough demand for it to be worth it.
