Altaf's open warning to Karachites

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain on early hours of Tuesday gave an ultimatum to the president and the prime minister to impede violence in Karachi within next 48 hours, DawnNews reported.

In a press statement issued from London, Hussain also threatened the government of strong public retaliation if the deadline expires without obtaining desired results.

People would take on the task of defending their lives and belongings by taking the law into their own hands, the statement said.

Hussain said he tried everything possible within his powers to help stop target killings and violence in the city but his efforts were appeared to be going in vane.

He warned President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, that the government would be the sole responsible for repercussions if peace was not restored in the Sindh capital.

Now Zardari must be thinking why he ignite MQM vs ANP issue, he invited more doom to his own govt. The Rupee value has slipped down from 85.120 in june 2011 to 86.433 today 2 Aug 2011. Only Solution left is throw all Afghan refugee(NOT PAKISTANI PATHANS)from Karachi to their country Afghanistan & to create new provence giving Karachi Jamshoro & Hyderabad to it. The violence seems unstoppable now until elections atleast, & it is sad fact that it will take Pakistan 50 years back economically if above mention steps are not taken on urgent bases, already rupee value has slipped too much in just a month period.

This is the problem with our country - we complain about corruption but when it comes to our own issues we readily pay up .. similarly .. instead of condemning something that is wrong .. you are trying to justify it by saying that what ZM did was wrong ..

ZM is not leading PPPP .. Altaf on other hand is the undisputed pir of MQM .. so I hope you notice this difference

Sure, but being 'formed on an ethnic basis' is not the issue - making ethnically derogatory speeches and spreading ethnic hatred is, whether it is the MQM or PPP.

I justified nothing, merely pointed out that both the MQM and PPP have resorted to 'threats of violence'. I consider the PPP's threats worse, since they are not just threatening violence, but committing treason by talking of violence against the State and a movement against Pakistan.

The MQM represents a particular community/constituency. There is nothing wrong with that - one cannot ignore the fact that there are multiple ethnic groups in Pakistan.

As for 'creating new provinces', I see nothing wrong with that. As someone from Punjab, I have no issues with creating more provinces out of Punjab - it is irrelevant to me and wont make an iota of difference to the lives of Punjabis. All it does is create a new, smaller (and hopefully better governed) administrative unit. It isn't like I would need a passport to travel from North Punjab to South Punjab or Bahawalpur.

In the case of 'Jinnahpur', the idea makes just as much sense, though I think that the strategic and financial position of Karachi would require some sort of 'revenue sharing' (Karachi revenues) based on population between Sindh and 'Jinnahpur', that can be revisited on a regular basis, and adjusted with consensus between the two units.

Dividing Pakistan is a problem, creating more administrative units within Pakistan is not.

ZM is a senior member of the PPP - the PPP leadership is therefore complicit in his statements and actions given that they have not acted to kick him out of the party. Why is that hard to understand? What 'special powers' does ZM have that he continues to remain part of the PPP despite his threats of violence, secession, and ethnic hate-mongering? Does the PPP leadership bear no responsibility for the statements of a senior leader of the party? What kind of message is the PPP leadership sending by allowing such a man to remain a senior figure in the party?

I thought you did not like 'justifying one crime with another'? Why should kicking out a hatemonger and racist such as ZM be conditional on something the MQM does, or vice versa?

As far as I am concerned, Altaf, Zardari, Nawaz Sharif, ZM, Rana Sanaullah - they all need to be kicked out of politics, and preferably kicked out of Pakistan, lest they soil Pakistan's earth even more.
