London police launches probe against MQM chief

* Guardian report says Metropolitan police investigating controversial speech

LONDON: The London Metropolitan Police Wednesday launched an investigation against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain following complaints by PTI Chairman Imran Khan.

According to British newspaper The Guardian, the Metropolitan police was investigating a controversial speech by Altaf from London last week. “The investigation is in its early stages,” the newspaper said. The British Foreign Office said on Saturday that it “strongly condemned” all acts of violence in Karachi. It added: “We are deeply saddened by the recent violence in the city, including violence murderously directed against democratic political figures.”

Following the brutal murder of PTI leader Zahra Shah Hussain, Imran Khan tweeted, “I also hold the British Govt responsible as I had warned them about British citizen Altaf Hussain after his open threats to kill PTI workers.” Earlier, Metropolitan police spokesman Richard Jones also confirmed that they have started investigation against Altaf on hundreds of complaints. He said the police was in process of collecting evidence. The London police have dispatched text of Altaf’s speech to the Home Department for translation in English. “We would see what course of action should be taken once we get all the evidence,” said Jones. Meanwhile, MQM rejected all allegations against Altaf. inp

SC seeks details of Altaf’s whereabouts
* Asks if MQM registered in his name, party head duly elected
By Hasnaat Malik

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought the complete address and other details of Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain.

Hearing a plea that called for declaring Altaf an alien enemy of Pakistan and a ban on his telephonic addresses from abroad, the Supreme Court directed Barrister Zafarullah, a petitioner, to provide the abovementioned details. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising Justice Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmed and Justice Gulzar Ahmed asked the petitioner to check whether the MQM is registered with the Election Commission of Pakistan in the name of Altaf Hussain or some other MQM leader.

The chief justice questioned what was the status of the MQM and whether the head of the party is duly elected. The counsel, who had filed the petition under Article 184(3) read with Article 2A, 4,5,6,9 and 17, has made the federation through Ministry of Law and Justice, MQM chief, Election Commission of Pakistan and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority as respondents. Barrister Zafarullah has prayed to the court to pass an order stating that MQM is operating in a prejudicial manner to the sovereignty and integrity of Pakistan, therefore it should be banned and dissolved by the federation. He has sought alien enemy of Pakistan designation for Altaf.

London police assessing Altaf Hussain broadcast

LONDON: London police is assessing the broadcast of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain in which he allegedly threatened the workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Karachi.

According to our correspondent in London, Murtaza Ali Shah, the metropolitan police began the investigation of the telephonic address of the MQM Chief in the wake of countless calls it received against him.

It is pertinent to mention here that Imran Khan, Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had also held Altaf Hussain directly responsible for the murder his party’s leader of Sindh Chapter, Zahra Shahid Hussain on May 19, 2013 in Defence area of Karachi.

Khan had also blamed the British government for not taking adequate steps to save his party’s senior leader.

Earlier in the day, the MQM announced dissolution of its Coordination committees (Rabita committees) in Karachi and London, a day after the party supremo Altaf Hussain said that cleansing process has begun within the MQM.

The party has formed a twelve-member temporary committee to oversee the party's affairs. Members of the new coordination committee would be elected during a general worker meeting here on Saturday.

A day earlier, MQM’s Karachi Tanzeemi Committee (KTC) was dissolved, while the basic membership of Hamad Siddiqui, In charge of KTC, was also revoked as part of a cleansing drive that MQM leader Altaf Hussain launched a few days back.
