Altaf forgives Nawaz, Army officials for 1992 operation
KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement Quaid Altaf Hussain has announced to forgive PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif, Army officials, law-enforcement and intelligence agencies, who had launched the June 1992 operation against the party.
He asked the government to constitute a truth and reconciliation commission to identify the persons responsible for all wrongdoings, including imposition of martial laws and abrogation of the Constitution so that they could be asked to come forward to make a public apology over their wrongdoings.
He said this in his telephonic address from London at an Iftar dinner hosted in the honour of journalists, columnists and anchorpersons at the Lal Qila ground here on Sunday. The MQM chief called upon the prime minister to convene an all-party conference to discuss and resolve all the longstanding issues, including the problem of Balochistan.
He appealed to all political and religious parties to initiate a new era of political stability and devise a new code of conduct in the wake of existing political and economic situation in the country.
Altaf said like most political and religious parties, certain hosts of television talk shows were spending their time on non-issues instead of highlighting the real issues and problems being faced by the people of Pakistan.
He lamented that even after 62 years of Independence, the concept of one nation was not flourishing in Pakistan. He also spoke about Article 6 of the Constitution and the Charter of Democracy that was signed between the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Reading out Article 6 from the Constitution and certain clauses relating to the appointment of judges of the superior courts from the CoD, he said implementation of Article 6 would result in hanging of 200,000 to 300,000 people. He observed that the PPP and the PML-N were not implementing the CoD.
Altaf said he had great respect for Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and requested him not to talk about confrontational issues. We believe in reconciliation... we are against the politics of confrontation and revenge, he added.
He asked the government to stop the operation in Balochistan, recover all the missing persons and hold talks to resolve the problem. He said the MQM would organise an APC after Eid. He said the MQM was the only political party which had raised the issue of the implementation of the 7th Wage Award. A large number of journalists, including many from the Punjab and the NWFP, columnists and anchorpersons attended the Iftar.
